Soccer Practices Cancelled due to Heat

Anonymous
I'm wondering if your club or team even has a policy that practice will be cancelled if the heat index gets to a certain point? If so, what is that heat index when practice will be cancelled? Just curious if clubs or teams even have one. I know we cancelled for the cold if the "feels like" was below 25 or something. Thanks

Most clubs take guidance from the heat index chart: https://www.weather.gov/safety/heat-index

So practices are canceled if heat index in the yellow? or orange?

Does practicing on turf vs grass affect the decision?

There would be no summer practices if the cancelled in the yellow zone.

When we were overseas in a much hotter area than DC we had heat warnings that would cancel practice. Generally if over 35c (95f).

Compared to here though, our club did a much better job with water breaks. The kids had a water break easily every 15 minutes when it was hot and humid. Here we've had practices with only one or two water breaks which we found quite odd.

Im from the deep south where summer extreme heat was the norm and we rarely if ever saw practices cancelled. As pp said frequent water breaks are key. You could mention that to the coach or just hold dc home for practice on certain days. Or only send for morning. Coach will likely understand.

Common sense is always the best approach with heat.

So practices would most likely be cancelled in the Orange and Red zones as those are heat index of 104 and above. The darker Yellow zone would definitely require more water breaks as PPs mentioned, as would the lighter yellow zone.

I am from there and will bet bottom dollar that I can do laps around you in every subject. Take your pick. This is matter of stamina, not science, and also common sense. You do you and keep your prejudices to yourself. Our civic discourse can use a break from keyboard cowboys.

If you are equating hydration levels to stamina you’ve already lost.
