I’m worried that the schools are going to spend millions for only a few weeks of hybrid schooling.

One of the things that worries me with all of the expenses that will be incurred this year, with the extra cleaning, buses. Technology, hand sanitizer, masks etc. is that after a few weeks, some new report will come along and say it’s safe for everyone to be back at school, and we will have spent millions for practically nothing.
Look at the American Pediatric report that just came out urging schools to reopen. I think it’s fair to say that if this had been released six weeks earlier, we would not be going into the fall with schools only attending in person classes twice a week. I suppose Northam feels like it’s too late to backtrack now, but does this mean he’s likely to reverse course a month into the school year? Schools are facing their lowest budgets ever and now they have to risk spending millions for something that may not be used beyond a few weeks? What is the solution to this? Or is there one?

That’s what you’re worried about?? I would be thrilled if they had some new finding that this virus is going away and it’s safe to put everyone (children and the adults who work there) back into schools.

Not every doctor and scientist agrees with the AAP article, by the way.

We're still going to need the disinfectants and masks. Having the technology will be good for it there is an outbreak or summer school. Some of it will be able to be used in the classroom.

Unlikely. Much more likely everyone goes to 100% DL.

This. As soon as a school has a case, they’ll be shut.

I agree. My worry is that schools are going to do tons of work to get ready for a hybrid model and then we will almost immediately have to switch to DL and we won't be fully prepared for that.

Yeah, there’s absolutely no reason to believe that magically everything will be fine in August. The US has had record high cases for the past few weeks. The virus is absolutely out of control. Nothing has improved and people many people are barely following the guidelines, if at all. The situation is getting worse, not better.

What they spend is not something I care about at all. What a strange thing to be focused on.

This is why with the exception of elementary, I think the schools should just go to 100% DL and contract it out to established companies like Virtual Virginia. It’s far less of an expense and hassle. And the kids would be taught by people who have experience teaching virtually. Classroom teachers can still assist. I am a teacher by the way.

You don’t care if the schools spend thousands of dollars on laptops, webcams, plexiglass, etc to only use for three weeks? You don’t see why skills would feel some reservation in making these purchases now or f it turns out they won’t have to use them?

That isn’t the plan. Contact testing, not closing the whole thing.

They would have to test hundreds of people every time this happens. And who pays for the contact testing, the school system?

The minute we get to cold and flu season, we'll be DL off and on for some time. It's not a bad investment.

Until a vaccine is widely distributed, we should expect DL as part of the school year.

The health department. Same as who is paying for it now across DC.
