Getting home from hospital without a car during COVID

Anonymous
Prior to the pandemic, my husband and I were planning to get home from the hospital by Uber since we don’t have a car. Now we’re weighing a bunch of different options- trying to time a car rental, Zipcar membership, borrowing a friend’s car, etc. Hospital is within walking distance for appointments (2.5 mi) but not right after birth. We’re also thinking of how to get to first pediatrician appointments. Appreciate any recommendations or personal experiences!

Just ask a friend to help you out?

You’re gonna need a car seat. Just join one of those car sharing things. And get a cheaper car seat with the removable base like the Chicco.

We didn't have a car when we had our first baby and it was all fine, but we did have family who could help us out with getting home from the hospital and the first pediatrician appointment. In your case right now I might rent a car starting a week before the due date. But I bet an uber would be fine too.

I would borrow a friend's car or get a rental. I would not put a newborn in an Uber -- both because you guys have no practice installing a carseat and leaving the hospital is not a great time to try it out, and also because I'd be worried about Covid risk in the car.

Super easy to just rent a car. They're always available last minute.

Borrow or rent a car for the first 2 weeks.

Just take an Uber. What’s the issue?

You’re walking 2.5 miles to maternity appointments?

Totally easy to do a last minute rental esp right now. I’ve done several at national airport for various reasons and it was always fast.

Doesn’t Uber work anymore? I haven’t needed it in awhile but I hadn’t heard it’s totally down.

The Ubers I've seen around have put up plastic between the front seat and the back seat. And even if they don't have that put the windows down, wear masks and put blanket over baby.

Rental can work too, but that is an awful lot of work to pick up the car, drive home, then return the car, especially when you have a new baby to deal with.

This might sound crazy, but easier than renting a car and returning it, you could even take some plastic sheeting and if Uber drive doesn't have it up already, hold it up in front of you. 2.5 miles will go by in no time.

Or use one of those disposable hazmat suit things to cover family and baby and then toss them.
