What helped your kids eczema?

Anonymous
Almost 1 yr old had really bad hot spots especially behind knees and hip. It seems to be getting worse all of a sudden and have not not changed any soaps and detergents. It’s bothering her/itchy - what helped soothe and also heals your child’s ezcema?

(Side note - she has allergies and been Avoid all allergen foods but she still seems to have reactions for example, randomly to Peanut butter even though she’s had several times before and isn’t allergic but is allergic to cashews) Thanks!

Aquaphor, very gentle soaps (real soaps such as Dr Bronners or Grandma's, not detergents.
Talk to pediatrician about cortisone if other methods don't work - usually you can use it for short periods of time just to heal the rash and then focus on prevention.

Did you check with her Ped? The Dr. may be able to prescribe a topical cream depending on how severe it is. In the meantime, you can use cortisone with aloe to relieve itching and religiously apply Aquaphor to rehydrate those parts. Don't overdo the cortisone, if you put it on too often and too much, her skin will be dependent on it, until it doesn't work anymore, your goal when using these 2 ointment is to relieve the itch so she can prevent scratching, and getting the skin back to normal so you can stop using cortisone cream, while continuing the use of Aquaphor.

I have 3 with eczema, different things worked for each of them , outside of eliminating allergens ..the one thing that worked for all them (And the cheapest of all)was zinc oxide ointment .

The only thing that helps DD (and me) Is a change in diet- no processed foods and as much fish oil and probiotics (Yogurt and sauerkraut) as we can stand. It’s hard b/c DH and DS are not similarly effected but it’s worth it (and I lost 25 lbs!)

Steroid when needed. Lots of Eucerin Eczema after every bath. As soon as I saw a red or bumpy spot, I used the steroid ointment or cream. That helped keep it in check.

My DS grew out of it mostly by age 2. His skin was still a bit sensitive though and he still had trouble spots pop up. Now at age 3.5, he has almost no issues.

Our 3YO's eczema always flares up during allergy season. What works for us:
--Desonide ointment (but sure to specify ointment, not cream) on trouble spots
--Aquaphor once in the morning and once at bedtime (and after showers)
--Showers instead of baths
--Shorts instead of pants in hot weather (trapped sweat seems to exacerbate it)

I found something that works by accident. DD had major tangles in her hair. I made her take a bath and she put every conditioner we had on her hair while sitting/laying down in the tub for atleast 20 minutes. The combination of the warm water and the high amount of conditioner that rinsed off of her hair in the tub for the twenty minutes dramaticallly reduced her eczema the following day. Makes sense in retrospect.

Sorry to hijack but my son has eczema on his hands and hand sanitizer makes it much much worse. Has anyone found a replacement for those times when he can't wash with soap and water?

African Black Soap has been great for my son. After a warm (not hot) bath or shower, washing -- only if necessary -- with the black soap, and a very quick blot with towel I apply jojoba oil all over his damp skin. We use a steroid if he has an outbreak, but it is rare these days. OTC never did the trick for him. Kids food allergies and sensitive can change over time; you might want to get that checked out. My son's actually went away with age, but he still has occasional skin issues.

By the way, not sure what detergent you're using but we recently started having trouble with ours. We've used Seventh Generation for years with success, but it started causing issues. Switched to Charlie's Soap and things resolved.

For us, switching soap was enough. I was using Mustela specifically for eczema with no results. DD spent a long weekend with my sister in law who used Aveeno and her rashes completely cleared. We switched to Aveeno and haven’t had another issue since

Our pedi said to do the following:

2 lukewarm baths a day. Immediately after each, slather on Aquaphor to seal in the moisture. I know this is counterintuitive to most advice to avoid baths. But it worked for my son. Actually one luke warm bath a day plus Aquaphor worked just fine.

He used Cetaphil liquid cleanser if a soap was needed. Otherwise, no soap.

Daily shower but no soap (soap and shampoo only once per week. Dr. gave us an rx for vanicream, which he uses daily. If we skip even one day, it get really dry and painful.

Protopic/tacrolimus worked for my son.

Aveeno eczema therapy lotion, shorter & fewer baths, and using less soap.
