Asking about more permanent structures, vs ones you have to build, like Lego. DD has the Calico house that fits on the little table. But for her upcoming birthday she is getting more parts, like a playground, pool, etc.
If you have all those in your house, how do you store? Is there a “permanent” setup, or do your kids take out and put away every time? Do you have a dedicated area for these types of toys? |
My kid keeps his “kitty city” on the floor in an area in his room. When I vacuum I give him warning and he moves everything to his desk until I am done. |
We have a 5x5 IKEA Kallax in our basement and each setup gets its own shelf + a plastic bin for all the little parts. So like there's 2 lego shelves, 1 calico critters shelf, and each kid has their own Playmobil shelf. All the other shelves have other games/toys/books/play-doh/that sort of thing |
We have a giant shelf that's shaped like a tree, and DD stores all her calico critters there. She says they live in the tree and religiously puts them back there every evening |
We keep the permanent structures in the closet, either on the floor or on a shelf, and the smaller pieces go in a bin. And then I shut the closet door and I forget they all exist! |
I have a set of plastic drawers. The pieces go in the drawer. I don't super-organize them, but they have a place. |
we have quite a bit of playmobil. The permanent structures go in or on an ikea kallax shelf, and then for the little pieces and figures we have some container store smartstorage bins that are labeled based on theme with internal divider pieces inside. We have a play area that is gated off in one corner of the basement with a play table (gated off from our puppy) and things may stay out down there, though I get her to clean up before getting a different kind of toy out generally. Things that get played with outside of the gated area have to be picked up. |
what age are your kids loving these? |
My 7 year old is just starting to get into Playmobil. The pieces are too small for younger kids |
This is OP. We got the house for her 2nd birthday but removed the smaller pieces until recently. She has been steadily interested in playing with the little figurines since age 2 (turning 5 next month). My son is 2.5 and is starting to pick them up and play now (we obviously keep the small pieces away from him) |
My almost 4 year old loves playmobil and can do almost all of the manipulations on her own (she doesn't do the initial building part, but can reattach things if needed)--but she has really good fine motor skills. She got a playmobil farm toy as a gift at around 2.5 that we let her play with with a lot of smaller bits saved for later (she mostly had the barn and the animals at that point, but we got all the small bits out at age 3). My nephew who lagged a bit on fine motor skills got really into playmobil at around age 6. |
My kid has a corner of the living room for her calico critter village. Her playmobile and other building stuff is strewn across her room.
She's 9 and still into all of it. Now, I would say she's more into building and making stuff for her critter or building kits with playmobile, but she still does a bit of pretend play. |
