Did anyone else catch Cal Thomas' segment on why the recent Supreme Court decision to give Corporations First Amendment rights is a step towards reversing Roe V. Wade? And that not only COULD it be a step toward reversing RVW but that the Supreme Court SHOULD reverse RVW?
I felt like I was listening to a Right to Life commercial. And I thought, "This is what they call 'commentary from BOTH sides of the aisle'."? Where's the equal time for NARAL? Is there something I don't know about WTOP? Were they recently purchased by Fox or something? I see Cal Thomas' bio states he is affiliated with Fox..... does WTOP usually drift one way or another, Left or Right? |
Here is the full list of commentators from their website: John Riggins, David Gregory, John King, Brit Hume, Chip Reid, Bob Schieffer, Lou Peck, Chris Core, Cal Thomas, Colby King, Chris Matthews, Chris Wallace, Dave Ross, George Stephanopoulos, Gordon Peterson, Gwen Ifill, Mark Plotkin, Joe Barber. I think a few qualify as liberal voices, but I don't know enough about them to judge how fair the balance. |
Usually WTOP leans to the Left, but not quite every time. |
When they say "both sides of the aisle", typically they don't mean equal time on a given topic, or a debate. As a PP listed, they have a range of political commentary contributors -- I don't know how they decide who does a piece when and on what issue, but I've found them to be fairly balanced. |
Cal Thomas is very conservative. |
After the way SCOTUS went looking for the chance to overturn precedent on campaign finance, I think Thomas has every reason to think they might be equally proactive on Roe.
I predict the next things to follow will be second amendment gun rights for corporations and an argument that we can't extend marriage rights to gays until we do so for corporations. And maybe Exxon for president! |
HA! WTOP is rabidly conservative! I have never heard anything left-leaning. OP's complaint doesnt surprise me in the least. |
what are you smoking? |
I think the PP who thinks WTOP is rabidly conservative may be confusing the station with WMAL. |
Agree with the PP. WTOP is pretty balanced IMO. OP, was it the message you didn't like, or the fact that a radio station would air that message, or what? I almost never agree with Cal Thomas, but I believe his POV is considered, and he is not alone in his positions. |
I heard the segment too and while I disagree with Cal Thomas, I did not blame the radio station - free speech is just that - free speech. Also I am sure that one of their other commentators can do a response to Cal Thomas if they want to. |
Do you get this angry when you listen to NPR? |
But you don't understand -- certain points of view are just wrong and should not defile the airwaves. Anger is most appropriate in such a case. |
There's nothing quite like an open mind! (PP, I am presuming you said that in jest) |
NP here. I'm on the fence about this. I tend to agree there should be a multiplicity of viewpoints so you can hear everything that people are thinking. On the other hand, the pp has got a point -- would it be okay to give radio time to someone who argues that women are intellectually inferior to men? Or to someone who thought the Holocaust was a good idea? |
