How to keep black clothes from fading in the wash

Anonymous
Hello!
So, I have kind of a silly question, but how in the world do you keep black clothing from fading in the wash? I have so many casual black dresses, blouses, and skirts that once they go into the wash they come out, well, not so black. It looks awful, and I have no clue what I’m doing wrong! I need to go to laundry school!

Thank you!

I haven't tried it, but Woolite makes a detergent for black clothes.

Wash them inside out. Add vinegar to your rinse water-- it'll help rinse out the soap and make colors look brighter longer.

The quality of the garment is also an issue. Something more expensive will hold the dye better.

In addition to above, I dryclean alot of my black items. In the wash, they are only washed with other blacks and done on a cold, gentle cycle with no dryer.

I've also heard that vinegar is good for preventing black clothes from fading.

Turn items inside out; use cold water; half the amount of detergent; dry on low heat until items are still a bit damp and hang dry.

If the fading bothers you, you could dye them with Rit dye. It is not hard to do.

I have this and occassionally use it. It seems to help. Not sure if the Woolite for dark clothes is a cure all or not, but I also wash my clothes inside out.

Does this work for front load washers? The Woolite I mean, I have a bottle but I thought it had to say HE on it for front load....or I am completely off on this?

Yes, this - cold water only, and I never use the dryer for my dark clothing.
