Summer league? Am I being paranoid?

Anonymous
Im in NJ. Our travel team of course missed their spring season, so our coaches have developed a summer league of 6 regular games starting the end of July. I don't know how I feel about it. What are the risks? Is it too soon to play regular soccer again?

They have just started drill practices again, but that is keeping all the boys separated.

What are your clubs doing? Are other teams starting regular games already?

Of course it’s too soon, but businesses are tryi got stay afloat. We aren’t opening up because it’s safe. We are opening up because the government can’t support an entire country not working.

Summer soccer is a cash grab for clubs. The quality is low and the injury risk high. You’d be better to do private training or other fitness work rather than play meaningless games at a subpar level.

Phase III in Virginia would allow it, so I'm not sure why it's too soon. What else would you be waiting for? What is your criteria? There will be risk in soccer as long as there is no herd immunity.

What do they say if you do not want to do it? Many clubs are okay with players not participating

No, it is not too soon. Arbitrary government "phases" are not valid indicators to go off of. The evidence suggests that the current risk of going about your business per usual and dying of a contracted illness is minimal.

+ 1 If we had done a better job of locking down we would be able to move on safely. But no.... Might as well be honest about it now. We've failed, and have no choice but to reopen during dangerous circumstances. Ruined our economy for nothing.

I guess that's why states with surges are backing away from their reopening plan, and going backwards instead of forwards? You keep being in denial, but stop trying to affect the behavior of others. If we had even the tiniest bit of leadership from someone who gave a f... about us, we would be in a much better state by now. It is NOT safe.

That's hypocritical. Are you not trying to affect the behavior of others by sharing your perspective? In terms of leadership, try using your brain and take accountability for your own safety, it's quite empowering really.

It's not about your own safety--it's about everyone's safety. Stop this me - me - me crap that got us into this situation and think of others for a bit.

My club is not doing summer league and also not doing any tournaments until late august. So no games this summer. But that’s mostly because it’s so hot in this area. Also, a lot of coaches don’t want to risk injury. We are having social distancing practices weekly.

Ds is doing sports camp. I feel comfortable with this bc it has lots of rules. We signed up for fall travel but not sure in comfortable with summer even though it's only 2 months difference. I guess i want a little more time to see how the numbers do over the summer.

Personal choice. Live in fear or live with a reasonable degree of precautions.

Live with a reasonable degree of caution, or live like a selfish baby.

Seeing what’s going on with Florida and Texas, doing anything because the government says it’s OK is idiotic.
Wait until fall to even consider playing contact sports, and yes, soccer is a contact sport, if you have any sense whatsoever.
