Private & Independent Schools
| We've visited twice, but still can't get a feel for the academic or cultural environment of the school. Any current/past parents have any feedback on it for the lower grades (1-3)? What is the academic day like? Are there many specials throughout the day? What are the teachers like? Is the admin. strong? Do they really allow for individualized accommodations? We've heard it's overly-structured, but that may be a good thing for our dc... |

My DS has been there since kindergarten and is now in 4th grade and I love it. It is highly structured, which is good for DS, but extremely nurturing. They are known for being highly individualized. In my experience, any issue that comes up, they role up their sleeves and deal with it. My son is a good student and is challenged there but sometimes needs extra prompts to pay attention, which he gets.
They have PE every day, which I love. There is also art and music including a strings program that starts in 3rd grade. They also have a computer class and Spanish, which is probably the weak link, but I think languages are for almost all elementary schools that don't use immersion. The administration, at least in the lower school, is extremely strong. They know all the kids and are on top of every situation. The head of the school was a much respected faculty member of Maret before going to McLean. I haven't had much contact with her, but I have nothing negative to say. My other DC goes to a Cathedral school and i like the parents at McLean much better. Its a nice community and I have not heard a single negative word from a parent there. |
