School budgets 2021-22 and their impact on teachers

I'm a new teacher as of this past year, so haven't been through an economic crisis before.
Is it safe to assume school budgets will shrink fairly dramatically in 2021-22, even if they're being held steady this coming year?
Will that translate into larger class sizes and layoffs of more junior teachers? I'm wondering whether I should start retraining this year for some other career.

my friend was hoping to recoup the step salary increase next year.

How on earth would that be possible? State and local budgets are going to have gargantuan holes given the loss of tax revenue. NY is looking at laying off 22,000 workers.

They’ve told us to expect a 3-4% cut at every level. No after school programs, no money for supplies, possibility of furloughs and layoffs. Not sure how we will implement all these incredibly expensive measures to control the spread of the virus. Leadership told us that without a federal stimulus for schools that we will be fully remote next year because opening would be too costly with mitigation in place.

It depends on where you are. DC is getting an increase; just not as high as what was planned.

There was another post on this as well and parents replied that they thought it "didn't make sense" that schools would have huge budget cuts next year. Unfortunate, because the kids are going to be returning to a really bare bones experience next year. We just can't keep doing more with less.
