| My rising 2nd grader will choose 100% DL next year. Just wonder if you have any ideas on how AART and his teacher will be screening students like him for the AAP programs? Thanks. |
You can't take the COGAT virtually so I'd say your chances for AAP screening will be limited. |
I would think they would have to figure that out, to provide equitable services. |
| Send him to school. |
OP here. Just answer if you know information. Remember this, everyone has their own choices and up to this point, each choice has pros and cons. The 2 days one still has some disadvantages such as kids have to have asynchronous learning for other three days, parents' work schedule conflicts, health concerns... With that being said, I am collecting information before making an important decision for my kids, so I dont need garbage! |
FCPS will either figure out a way to administer the Cogat or will choose a different test or admission criteria. If your DC is gifted, then the academics of 2nd grade pale in comparison to the need for social learning. Send him to school. |
They’ve already said they won’t be providing equitable services since they cannot guarantee aap, ap, immersion etc for online. |
|
I'm sure they will set up a day where kids can come in and get screened with the COgAT. They will just space the kids out in the cafeteria of the assigned school or something like that.
I'd hold off on asking this question though... it is #7890008766578 on the priority list of things FCPS is trying to work through. It's not a particularly hard issue to solve. Just isn't pertinent or priority. |
Stop being a jerk. Someone in OP's household might be in one of the covid high risk categories. You don't know why OP is choosing the 100% DL, and you shouldn't assume that their reason isn't valid. |
| I think you could choose to take cogat with GMU if you are willing to pay for it. I am more concerned about fairness if GBRS for DL kids, not that GBRS is ever that fair. I might take my kid to do WISC early if we go DL route to be safe. |
Sounds like a question for the AART and principal. |
| I am not confident that we will be provided answers prior to 7/10 deadline to submit opt-in for the school year. |

There is no way they will be providing decent in-person services next year anyway. DL is fine. Your child just needs to make sure to participate in class the same way he/she would do in school and it will shine through. Your child's 1st grade teacher already rated your child, so if your child's teacher though he/she was gifted, it is already noted in their file.
If it is something you are worried about, make sure you send a message to your child's AART after school starts to make sure your child is on their radar and they can evaluate her/him properly. |
I thought GBRS is not done until 2nd year? Would 1st grade teacher have already provided GBRS to the file? I know in pool scores are not finalized until later I assume Dc will "in pool" based on NNAT score. |
I actually think in person classes are going to be very effective. My DS will most likely be in a class with 15 kids instead of 27. That is more time with the teacher when he is in school. Given that he was doing his own worksheets for math, Level II services, and not getting a ton of differentiated instruction, any additional time with the Teacher will be great. 15 kids means fewer discipline issues and fewer reading groups. So while his actual time in the classroom is decreased, the quality of that time should increase. |
