3rd Grade Summer Bridge

If you have a 3rd grader, who is continuing at their current school, are you planning to do summer bridge? If no, is it because of safety concerns or another reason?

We're not. DCPS has been clear that a big reason they are doing these programs is to test their new health and safety protocols. I like DCPS, but I am unconvinced that they will get it right immediately, and I'm not willing to risk my family's health for a program that seems to have dubious benefits for my child.

Have they said that summer bridge is open to anyone who wants to go?

Or is it just for students at academic risk?

Open to anyone. I believe registration opens tomorrow.

Open to anyone in 3rd, 6th 9th. Dcps sent out an email tonight including a link for registration. There were little details as to what the program will actually entail

Can you do this if your kid is in a charter?

No. It is only for DCPS students.

Teacher here at a JKLM. We have absolutely no idea what the program is. We have been told schools will have to provide all materials worth their own budget. The classes are capped at 8 kids to allow for sped teachers to come in to provide services. At my school, every third grade teacher has refused to teach this program. The rumor we have heard is am they are having an extremely hard time staffing this throughout Ward 3. I’m not sure about other wards.

Woah seriously? I teach K-2 so that announcement was kinda like 'oh ok.' to me but schools using their own budget sucks. No wonder my admin did not approve my paid summer project for students yet, it all has to go to 3rd grade (which is fine).

I teach in Ward 5 and I know 2/3 of my colleagues who teach 3rd grade already said they would not do it and the 3rd one is already out of the country...

Thank you, jklm teacher. Do teachers get a bonus for teaching this bridge program?

It’s admin pay, so yes it’s extra. But if you have been teaching over 10 years it’s actually less than your hourly rate.

I can add a couple more details. It’s from 9-1 M-Th for two weeks with lunch included in that time. It’s two hours academic and two hours SEL. But with social distancing and classes capped at 8, it’s unclear how much team building there really will be. Student will stay with the same teacher for the two weeks.

I’m at a Ward 1 school and none of our 3rd grade teachers wanted to do it. As of last week admin was still recruiting.

Huh that's so true. I am a newer teacher and admin has asked me to teach summer bridge, I am still undecided...because well it's not really about the money.

Admin pay is actually more like $80+ an hour hahaha. Silly DCPS

If you're scheduled to teach 3rd grade next year and you don't want to do bridge, can the principal switch you to a different grade and have the teachers who want to do summer bridge teach 3rd?

Parent here. Third grade is tough to teach.
