noise levels

Is anyone trying to work or do school online while their children scream or play loudly (DH is watching them) ? Have you found a way to truly concentrate? The noise can be very loud at times and I really don't want them to be silent all day as we are still homebound a lot.

Yes it has happened. My DH is working in our basement office (no door). I usually go upstairs in one of the bedrooms if I need quiet for a meeting. We have a babysitter coming part of the day so she takes them outside some, but they are still noisy inside sometimes.

Listening to white or pink noise on noise cancelling headphones works for me

OK, thanks I'm already doing those things at different times. They are just so noisy at times!!! I mean that in the most loving way.

Due to construction noise nearby, I purchased intense industrial headphones (the kind meant for lawnmowing or other heavy-duty mechanical work). Insanely heavy, but I can't hear my kids when the headphones are on! My kids aren't toddlers or anything, and my husband also can listen in; otherwise, it could be unsafe.

They're nice because they make me cultivate a (slight) sense of solitude--something I really miss!

There is no screaming or yelling inside the house. Screaming is reserved for emergencies, like a fire or gushing blood. If you want to yell, get permission to go outside.

NP. I totally agree with these rules. I also know that they are not wholly enforceable all the time with younger children, who are still learning to control their voices and volume, and to whom "emergency" isn't always as clear a concept as it is to you, me, or kids with a few more years under their belts. Of course this is a time when kids are having to learn to think more about the noise they make indoors, but sometimes adults just need to have some technical help with the noise.

To OP: If the weight of serious noise-cancelling headphones would bother you (I have a hard time wearing that type of headphone for long), you can get soft silicone earplugs online or from a drugstore. You can mold them with your fingers to fit into your ear and they are less prone to popping out than foam earplugs, for me at least. Not a perfect solution as I don't love earplugs either, but they dampen noise enough so that a sudden "forgot the rules" yell doesn't sound nearly as abrupt.

I was going to go with headphones. I know I don't like wearing mine all the time but headphones with some classical music or jazz or something that is pleasant to listen to and not distracting to you should help.

A really good pair of in-ear noise cancelling headphones. And kids must use inside voices when they are inside. All games and tv shows must be at acceptable levels to me, since I'm the one working. Some times I encourage them to wear kid-friendly sound-limiting headphones.

Sure, then make it the entire neighborhood's problem. This is a really inconsiderate mindset. They're all trying to work too.
