What do you think of this Alta Vista house?

We are looking to move out of downtown DC and wondering about this house in Alta Vista. It seems fairly close to the metro and there is the YMCA also nearby.

Is it a nice, family oriented neighborhood? How about the schools? Are they comparable to the Pyle/Withman ones?
Thank you!

I live in one of the most expensive houses in the neighborhood. It’s an awesome neighborhood. There are a lot of young families, a lot of diversity and a lot of personality in the houses. People take care of their homes here. I’m not in the schools yet (kids are younger) but everyone loves Wyngate elem and wj I chose this neighborhood though because of the diversity. I have no desire to send my kids with the snobby white kids of Whitman.

This house is not worth 1.6. I haven’t seen it but I got an email about it so I analyzed everything. There is little personality to this house. We paid over 1.5 recently for our house and got more space, a similar lot, but house has beautiful molding, better upgrades (pedestal in the powder, builder grade faucets, and no real cubbies in the mudroom). We built our house directly with the builder. The exterior is weird af too. I think the house is worth 1.45 and that’s generous. But that’s just my opinion, and the seller probably won’t go for that low bc they bought it for 1.53, but I think they got ripped off. Go check it out!

Great street- I know the neighbors who are super nice. Good location. Close to NIH metro, bethesda etc. School is good- a little overcrowded.

Who was the builder? That is super high for a five year old home in Alta Vista. You could buy a nice place in East Bethesda for that price!

Its a great neighborhood. Very friendly and a little more diverse in socio-economics than Pyle/whitman. There’s also a ton of international families. I think the price is about right—I’ve definitely seen uglier and smaller sell for that much. To get much cheaper in the wyngate area, you need to look at the houses that are 10+ years old. There are definitely some nicer old houses that come on the market from time to time—rooms tend to be smaller and lots tend to be bigger.

There is not real diversity in that neighborhood. But, keep telling yourself that.

One thing to look at is how overcrowded the elementary school is. You can see the numbers on their website, or just drive by and count how many portable classrooms there are, if any.

The elem school for this house, Wyngate, is not overcrowded and doesn’t have portables. I think this house is overpriced and they should have done a better job of staging it at this price.

Excellent schools (Wyngate, North Bethesda, WJ), great neighborhood. The YMCA will be great until the summer after your oldest is in kindergarden: then you may want to keep the YMCA membership as a gym and year round pool, but you'll want Wildwood Manor Swim Club for your and your child's social life. A great community!

You’re thinking of ashburton elem, not wyngate.

Just another cookie cutter McMansion.

The kitchen is okay but the rooms seem sort of cramped for a house that size.

We live in the neighborhood. Very nice, friendly with occasional exceptions, just like anywhere. Lots of families with young kids.

It's overpriced.
