Part time non play based preschools?

Anonymous
We are looking for a non play-based (we want something a bit more academic) part-time preschool for a 3 and 4.5 year old in the Bethesda, Kensington, Chevy Chase area.
Co-op won't work since I have 4 kids...
Any suggestions?

Just curious what kind of academics you're wanting for your preschoolers. Lots of preschools incorporate "academic" skills into fun activities--counting the number of children at school that, recognizing their names and those of their friends. Are you looking for something beyond that?

That should read, "counting the number of children in their class that day..."

Play-based preschools are academic. They just teach things using play.

Op here- Yes I am looking for something more academic than rec. her friends names- she can already do that. Np I am not looking for my child to be pushed but since she just misses the cut off for K I am looking for a place where she will continue to learn her sight words, sounds and beginning reading skills Yes, I know what play based means. We have gone to 5 "play based" pre schools and it is not what we are looking for. I can find pre schools that fit our wants/needs-- except the part time requirement.

So, back to the original question- Anyone know of part time non-play based pre-school in the down county area?

Thanks in advance

By part-time, do you mean 5 half days? If so, Franklin Montesorri?

FYI: most people use "preschool" to designate 2-3 year old classes and "pre-k" for the 4-5 year old classes. You might get better answers if you ask about pre-k programs.

And all early childhood educators will tell you that children learn through play. That said, you want one that will teach to your children's capabilities and interests, not to what is the norm.

If you are looking for September 2010, you might have missed your application deadlines already though.

Not in MD, so can't address you specific request.

The Bethesda Montessori School. In pre-K, your child can go from 9 to 12 or 9 to 3 (longer hours will be filled with daycare). It is definitely NOT play-based, and your daughter seems as if she might be a good fit. Hurry for the application, though...
