Another where to move in NY/NJ question

Anonymous
We are considering a move to be closer to NYC, where my husband's work is. He could work remotely most days with a couple of days per week to travel to midtown. I work remotely.

I'll try to give as many details as possible - Budget 800-900K, we have a 5-year-old and want a good public school in the area, 3+ bedrooms with a yard, somewhat like Brookland - lots of families with kids, social neighbors, etc, walkability would be a big plus. We are open to towns in NY/ NJ and would of course like to get somewhere with lowest taxes possible with everything else in consideration.

I do not know that area at all and feel we are asking for too much. Help, please. Does a place like that exist?

Thanks! We did think about CT as well. Would you suggest any towns over others there?

I feel like prices in NJ are really low; you will get a lot for your budget. I used to live in NJ 20 years ago, and the current prices in my small town hardly seem like they’ve gone up. Really strange.

Westport, Darien, Cos Cob, Newtown (yes it really is nice)

CT to NY commute is sheer hell, they mostly all are around NYC.

Remember NJ high property taxes, double ours in NoVa.

Does your home budget account for property taxes? I would good the New York Times column "if you are thinking of living in..." It gives a nice overview of the suburbs it profiles.

I am from Fairfield County CT. You may also want to consider town of Fairfield or even Greenwich. Last I checked property taxes were lower in Greenwich because it got a lot of tax revenue from businesses located there. Also the town is not all giant mansions even though that is what it is known for.

Also do you want to live in a town with a beach? That is an option not available in the DMV!

I live in Greenwich and the express train takes you to Grand Central in 45 minutes. I absolutely love it here OP and would be happy to answer any of your questions!

Thank you! I would definitely post and check for opinions once we know when and have a shortlist of options.

I took a quick look and was amazed with exactly what you said - giant mansions! It sort of makes me wonder about the financial mix at the local schools. Love the idea of beach close by.

Montclair is awesome... so are the property taxes! Glen Ridge is also worth a look.
