for great schools, Princeton (outer limits of commuting to NYC, but worth it for some people)
Menlo Park/Metuchen Highland Park (very safe and clean) Red Bank Alpine |
Another vote for Greenwich here! The property taxes are insane but the town is so lovely and there’s so much to do. It definitely has the most “amenities” of all the towns. Central Greenwich has all your shopping, Old Greenwich has all your beach needs, the schools (especially Riverside Elementary and Eastern Middle) are fantastic. It’s actually way more diverse than people think and you can find any type of housing there - ginormous estates to luxury apartment buildings. 45 minutes to Grand Central on the express train and a 45 minute to hour drive to upper Manhattan. |
Larchmont is so lovely but SO VERY RICH. |
That's because property taxes will be $20k a year for an $800k house. |
Sea Girt |
But that 800k house could be on a big gorgeous lot with excellent schools and a charming little downtown. |
Yes - definitely consider the bay shore towns in NJ. But schools are not great in Highlands/Atlantic Highlands - you might need to go further inland. The ferry is awesome, though. |
+1 |
If one of you doesn’t commute at all and the other does only twice a week, I’d look in rock land county too. You’ll get a lot more for your money. And towns like Pearl River are very nice. |
Or Nyack |
Ironically Greenwich school system is more diverse than surrounding schools like Darien and New Canaan. Also schools tend to be smaller due to local school systems. There are diverse and high achieving school districts if you know where to look. |
Yes! I am so impressed with the schools. Julian Curtiss has 60 countries and 30 languages represented. They're all great but also have advanced learning tracks and the high school offers an array of AP classes and sports/academic programs. People can be turned off because of how large the school is but they separate the kids into different "houses" and they know what they're doing. |
OP here. This is very useful to use as I think I forgot to mention that we aren't white, so having diverse surroundings is very important to us. Thanks! |
Larchmont is a great town. Entire village is walkable, you can walk to train station, restaurants, schools, library, etc. There is a beach and great town activities for the kids. |
