Getting my body back after baby

Anonymous
I've lost all but 5 lbs of my pregnancy weight, so my old pants should be fitting (they used to fit at this weight). They're not. I feel like (and probably am) wider in the hips than before. I know things loosen up to accommodate the baby. Does that ever go back to its original width, or should I just buy all new pants?

while i'm on it -- my feet also grew .5 size. Will that go back to normal, or am I stuck with these hooves?

Stuck with the large feet, I'm afraid. I was heartbroken to discover how many of my favorite shoes were now super-tight when I returned to work after my maternity leave.

The pants thing differs from person to person. I was down to my normal weight after 8 months, but everything fit funny. Then, I weaned. Now, 2 years out, I'm 5 lbs under my normal weight and everything is too loose. Go figure

I am at my pre-baby weight (though at the higher end of my usual 5-pound variance) and none of my pants or skirts fit either. 1 year out. I have been wondering the same thing...

It took me two years post-last baby for the waist to start to return to pre-baby. Losing the weight did not do it. I had to start doing some abominal exercises several times a week -- not crunches, I am working the side muscles.

I had really given up hope because I was not "fat" (no roll to pinch) but I guess the muscles were all stretched out. But 3 to 4 months of 3-4x/week and I have seen a huge improvement. Not quite back to pre-baby but it is starting to seem possible.

I might be the biggest freak on the planet, but my feet have shrunk. I think it might be from exercise shortening the tendon in the arch or something (I did some Googling of this and that's all I can figure out).

So did mine!!!! I though I was a freak too I recently bought myself some new shoes and the women at Nordstroms told be I was a size smaller than I was pre-preggers. I wound up going .5 size down for the shes but I was amazed since I have multiple pairs of shoes that did not fit after having baby, maybe they got wider too.

As for body/weight, I am 16 months out and 13 pounds less than pre-prego weight and still do not have my stomach/hips/thighs back to normal. I have been working hard for the past 4 months and things are getting better, but I didn't even put in an effort until after DC turned 1. It takes time and work, for some people it takes more time than work.

OP here --- so the follow up question is "Do I need to buy all new pants?" The waists fit, if I can get them up over my hips/thighs.

OP, I think the answer depends on how old your baby is (meaning how long since you delivered). If you're only a few months out, maybe give yourself some more time. I know what you mean though - thanks to nursing, I am under my pre-PG weight, but my pants still fit a little strangely. Mercifully, they do fit. Ab work helps, but it isn't going to make your hips shrink...

Is the hip widening due to a vaginal birth? I've had 2 c-sections (without laboring, both due to breech presentation) and my hips are back to normal. Just curious.

No, it's just how some bodies change during pregnancy.

If you had breech babies, it might be because your hips never widened during pregnancy and the babies didn't descend or go head down. My baby stayed head up and never descended and I'm guessing it is because my hips, narrow to begin with, never loosened or widened sufficiently for my big baby.

(I'm the 09:38 poster with the shrinking feet.)

OP here -- DD is 10 weeks and I did have a vaginal delivery. She didn't drop really until the actual delivery, but my hips loosened and widened early on. So now i'm screwy proportions of basically size 8/10 hips but size 6 waist. Belting pants now looks like I"m wearing a cinched potato sack. Do I just need more time?

I'm the PP with the breech babies, but if your DD is only 10 weeks, my non-professional opinion is that you need to give it a bit more time. Wait until closer to 6 months, some would even say 1 year. And kudos for losing so much of the weight so quickly!

On another note -interesting about the breech vs hips theory- I am going to google this a bit! Everyone finds it odd that both my kiddos were breech, this could finally be the explanation.

OP, take a few pairs to the tailor and see if you can salvage them that way.

OP, 10 weeks is not a long time. I would say buy a few new things that fit, but your body will probably change some more over the next year. There's no telling where it will end up, though! As you can see, everyone is different.
