Our cat who is about 4 has had diarrhea pretty much every day since we got him as a filthy flea-ridden kitten. He’s otherwise happy, healthy, and extremely energetic and his health markers/bloodwork are all normal so I haven’t done anything about it really, mostly because I didn’t have extra money to throw at the problem. But really, it’s gross and I’m getting tired of catching him after he goes to wipe his bottom so he doesn’t get poop everywhere. And I know he’s less comfortable than he could be because of it. His poop is also lethally stinky, it stinks up the entire floor, sometimes even through multiple doors.
There must be something that can be done and he probably needs better food, I just don’t know where to start. Any guidance? |
| Metronidazole was what fixed the problem for our cat. I can't believe that you haven't brought this up with your vet. |
| Our cat seems to be allergic to anything with corn in it. Change his diet and see how he fares. |
I did once a few years ago, the vet prescribed a new food that didn’t change anything and after that I’ve just let it go. I will ask about the metro at the next appointment, thank you! |
| Have you tried pumpkin or FortiFlora probiotic? This is what we are advised to use as cat fosters. |
Ditto this recommendation. What did you vet actually say about the issue? Did he/she run any other tests or give any insight into the issue? |
| In the 4 years of diarrhea did you ever ge your cat's poo tested. We just got a puppy who started having diahhrea. We immediately got a fecal test and he had parasites in his intestines. Easily treated. The vet visited $60, test $55, and medicine $17 was unde $150. You have probably spent more on cleaning supplies for the diarrhea in 4 years. |
| Get him treated for coccidia. Our shelter kitten had awful, smelly diarrhea but her (many) stool tests were negative. The vet treated her for coccidia anyway, and she’s been fine since then. Apparently this is a common problem in kittend from shelters, and some cats need to be treated multiple times to be rid of the infection - something to do with the lifecycle of the parasite. |
| My cat had this issue and it was SIBO/IBD. FortiFlora and metronidazole helped. |
