Virginia Tech Opening on schedule

Anonymous
The fall 2020 academic calendar has not been changed, with the exception that the eight instructional days after Thanksgiving break and final exams will be conducted entirely online. Instruction will begin on Monday, Aug. 24 and the semester will conclude on Dec. 16, as previously scheduled. Holidays and breaks prior to Thanksgiving will be observed, but nonessential travel away from campus is discouraged. Those who travel away from Blacksburg at any time before Thanksgiving break may be subject to quarantine upon return, depending on the location of travel and potential exposure to the coronavirus.

That's really great news. I just took a quick look at their website, and they've included good information, with the promise to keep adding more information.

They have canceled the housing contracts of some incoming freshman in order to eliminate triples, upperclassmen can no longer purchase dining plans, and they expect to deliver only 1/3 of their instruction in person. Pretty much, they want everyone to come back to Blacksburg just to stimulate the economy.

The plan ends the semester early, but doesn’t eliminate any breaks, which means kids will travel and bring COVID back to campus. It sounds like an absolute disaster.

Listen, I work for a university. They're all saying things and making plans. What happens in August is not anywhere close to set in stone. Plan to not be able to plan, and plan for your child to be living on campus but learning online.

But they are still charging 100% normal tuition, right? What a scam.

You are paying tuition for a stamped diploma. Come on now.

Some freshmen, with guaranteed on campus housing, contracted since December, have received emails stating that their housing contract has been canceled and have now been placed on a waitlist for fall housing.

This is per my ds who has friends going to VT next fall.

Scroll down and click on “not approved for housing” to see the options. It says freshman will be given first priority if housing becomes available, so I assume that means they don’t have room for all freshmen.

According to the reliable source known as “Reddit” , they have eliminated around 1,000 on campus housing spots.

+1. My university has announced they are "opening", but I have received zero info on how my classes will be modified to comply with social distancing. I have the option to move them online, but have held off because I am waiting to see if they would be willing to move my sections to larger rooms. No one has told me how to make such a request, which classes are getting priority for relocation vs. going online, nothing. Everything universities are saying right now is to make sure they get their money. Literally no one has worked out the details.

President Sands message yesterday included links to various departments and campus segments. The Housing/Dormitory link indicated billets would drop from 10,xxx to 9xxx.

Let me find that link,

The dorm rooms are so small, or at least they were in 1998. Not much difference between a double and a triple.
