College starting a week early

How would you feel if DCs college announced this week a revised fall semester, starting a week earlier than the orginal schedule.

Rumor that is going to be announced by DDs college very soon. We planned her sister's destination wedding for the week before school. Now with COVID, most people will not make the trip and now we think her sister probably can't attend as well. We are screaming.

I would be thrilled because starting early and ending on-campus classes before Thanksgiving is a great idea.

Great! That's what's happening with Pitt, although they're starting 5 days early. The first day of classes is now August 19 instead of August 24. The last day of in-person classes is now November 20 (instead of sometime in the early part of December).

How about reframing the question?

How would you feel if college announced that they have reviewed everything they know at this point in time and they believe it is safest for their students, faculty and everyone involved with the day to day support of the university to start school a week earlier than planned?

Possibly frustrated as plans may need to change - but grateful that the school reflected and created a plan to support the students needs.

My sons school just announced they are starting mid-August. They said they would work with students who had conflicts.

If I were planning a destination wedding right now I would assume it would be bride, groom and parents only. Postpone the party if you expect more than that.

This type of calendar shift — to avoid a return to campus after Thanksgiving— seems like a great idea.

Hanging on to any idea of guests flocking to a “destination wedding” in 2020? Not so much.

I expected to be hosting my whole family for a graduation party. Instead we will be watching on TV alone with DD. Expectations have to change.
