Back to work clothes

Anonymous
I am a SAHM who is about to re/enter
the workforce. I have been told that the dress
is business casual...the last time
I was working outside the home I lived in
Ann Taylor twin sets and black pants. I clearly
need some updating assistance---any thoughts as
to good new basics to invest in?

OP, alot of it depends upon what you will be doing, who you are working for, the clients, etc. There are many different levels of business casual. And then, of course, you need to consider your personal style.

Have you considered hiring someone to help you determine what level of dress is best? This person could help you plan an entire wardrobe that all goes together.

In my business casual office, twin sets and black pants still make appearances, usually when you've forgotten to pick up everything else at the dry cleaner. I would update the tops with a couple nice cashmere sweaters and some cute blouses, then pick up a couple tailored blazers -- all that you can mix and match. Skirts with tall boots are nice to switch up with pants.

OP here---no, have not considered hiring someone as we are trying to save $$.

PP--thanks for the tips...all good suggestions

OP, congratulations on your re-entry into the workforce! I am looking forward to doing the same.

Would you consider making do with what you already have until you gauge what others are wearing and then you can have a little mini shipping spree once you are a couple of paychecks down the road?

Best of luck to you!

I agree with 10:56- go with the twin sets and black pants for the first week or two. I work in business casual which trends towards the more casual side. In winter I usually just wear sweaters and pants.

In my office the standard is dress pants with short boots, a nice sweater, a jacket, and a scarf or necklace. I find the challenge to be finding jackets which are cut well and are in interesting colors/textures.

I'd buy a few cute blazers/jackets to get through the first week. Better to overdress. If you are trying to save money, go to Goodwill. I've gotten some of my best fitting blazers there (and you don't have to use the dressing room, just wear a light-weight shirt).

But a nice twinset does well in our office (or so I tell myself)
