Training rules/etiquette/ethics?

Anonymous
Can I pay someone for individual training who also works at my DC’s club but doesn’t not coach the same age group? Is that allowed in the coach’s contract? Is there anything ethically iffy about that if the coach I’m paying has no involvement or input whatsoever with the age group DC plays in?

Before everyone jumps all over me with criticism, let me answer the easy ones in advance:
- i know i don’t need a trainer to do 1 on 1 work with kid
- i know this is a waste of money, we have no camps this summer, so this is my splurge
- we’ve been using this trainer prior to their move to our club
- my kid LOVES soccer and my kid is not good at soccer. This is the only way that DC can keep up.
- my kid is kid of not-thin with a very thin sibling so this helps us keep DC fit without making things weird at mealtimes with the one skinny/one chubby

It’s understandable that you would question whether or not it is ethical. In youth soccer, paying a club coach’s side business is extremely common and frankly the ‘pathway’ many parents use to get their kids on to an elite team. The fact that you have a pre-existing relationship with the coach and don’t seem to be doing it with an ulterior motive in mind, makes it legit. Other parents might raise an eyebrow if they find out, but I wouldn’t worry about them.

You can pay any coach to train.

yes I would not worry, other coaches are training.

and you are very thoughtful because every reason you listed is valid and you owe no explanation to anyone.. its your money, time and family!

If you want to train with your coach do it. If people don’t like it they should worry about their own kid. Was back training weeks ago

Certain parts of the state are phase 2

I can't speak for every club, but I don't believe many (if any) have non-compete clauses in their contracts, or any training clauses.

Some clubs have trainer policies and guidelines when it comes to that, mainly to avoid the sense of favoritism if you happen to also train a player on your own team.

The onus is on the coach to know the rules, so if the coach agrees it's on them.
