Women who watch their weight...

Watching Morning Joe with my mom this morning. She turns to me and says “I don’t like Pelosi.” I assumed the reason would be political but she expanded, “she seems like the type of woman who watches her weight. Mika’s the same way. You can just tell.”
Is that a cultural stereotype? Women who watch their weight? Obviously, there are things people say about skinny women but I’d never heard this one before.

Anyone who is on television or in the public eye watches their weight! You should have told her men do this too. Look at Chris Christie who does not watch his weight, negatively portrayed.

You mom is a bit "crazy"

Was she trying to be funny?

My own mother says about women “she’s the type that would ask you to hold food for her.” She uses it to mean uptight skinny b*tch. Granted, my mother hates skinny people and makes that clear to me (a skinny woman).

I would just file that under "Crazy Shit Moms Say" and ignore it. Don't think about it, don't try to figure out the logic, don't ask follow up questions.

I don’t know if this applies to your mother but my family is all from rural South Carolina and obese. They mock urban people for caring about being healthy and skinny a lot. To them, there’s a cultural divide between people who “care about organic” and people who “just live life.”

I admire Pelosi, but she does look like the kind of woman who watches her weight very carefully and probably eats very carefully. You generally don't stay that lean (as a female) after 40 if you don't.

Of course Mika watches her weight - she's in an industry where women are punished for getting too fat, or gossiped about for getting too skinny. I assume that nearly all women in the public eye like that watch their weight because the alternative is to watch their income go away.

I kind of see where your mom is coming from. I get a little uncomfortable around women who have a certain thin, brittle look to them. I assume they will be a little anxious, a little humorless. Not eating takes a toll. (and I'm a daily exerciser who other people consider thin, but I also have a known love for snack cakes.)

Of course this is a thing and of course both Pelosi and Mika watch their weight.

Your logic is by far the dumbest I have heard in a while. “Skinny people are humorless.” Wtf does weight have to do with humor?

What is your mom's relationship to her own weight? And is weight (hers, yours, other people's) something she usually comments on?

Mika is a whole can of worms on that topic, though -- didn't she write a book about having an eating disorder?

of course i watch my weight. i care about my health. that said, i'm perpetually trying to lose 10 lbs.

Is your mom overweight OP? I wonder if this is just something she tells herself to feel better about gaining weight.

Nancy Regan looked like a woman who "watched her weight." Nancy Pelosi looks to have a normal figure for her age to me- not obese, but not paticularly thin and in shape either
