I am the meanest mother ever.

...because I now charge my son (a second grader) $1 every time he misses the bus and I drive him to school.

Seriously, I was at the end of my rope. Seems to be working, but, man, I feel like an ass.

If it teaches him how to be on time, I don't think it's so mean. I can think of meaner things.

put it towards his college fund if it makes you feel better. You are doing the right thing teaching a sense of responsiblity.

This is great advice, and I agree, you're doing the right thing.

Well, today I put it towards a candy bar. But you know, putting it towards college is a great idea.

when I was around that age (and even older) my mom used to charge me and my brother 10 cents whenever we left a light on after we had left the room......I did think she was the meanest mom ever.....BUT....I also quickly learned to turn off the lights.

I think she also sometimes charged us if we left for school without making our beds!! (maybe 5 cents? I can't remember!)

You're doing the right thing. Kids have to learn consequences. I fine mine if they don't make up their bed.

You are not mean. You are teaching your son logical consequences are you doing right by him. I am proud of you and think that MORE parents should be like you!

I am a criminal defense attorney. If every parent were like you, I would be jobless. Every mom should aspire to be the meanest mom ever.

I think that's a great idea, wish I had thought of it. In fact, I'm now going to pretend like I did, because I don't want to lose my hard-earned title of "meanest mom-EVER".

Great idea! Way not to be a doormat. I'll have to remember that one.

My son responds to this kind of consequence. We docked his allowance every time he forgot to put on his seat belt (he was in 6th grade - plenty old enough to not need to be reminded every time we got in the car). Cured that problem mighty fast. And it was only 25 cents per infraction!

I think this is a good idea- you are a good mom!
