What about school buses?

Many schools are planning on opening in the fall ... will you be driving them vs. busing?- if you have a choice.

My rising 5th grader has been dreaming of being a bus patrol for years, and she gets her chance next year. I would lean towards driving her otherwise, but honestly if she’s back in school anyway I’m not going to draw a solid line at bus riding.

We've always been a kiss 'n' ride family, but this was going to be the year that we switched to the bus because I was going to have a preschool drop off at the same time as the kiss 'n' ride line. Now with all the FCPS slides to the school board talking about recruiting more families to drive, I feel like a ridiculous jerk adding more bus riders into the system.

That, of course, presumes preschool is open in the fall.

We have a bus but I will drive.

I would imagine that they would have one kid per seat since the new number of kids would be smaller due to alternative days / times / weeks or whatever plan they go with. So the risk would be the same as in class or in lunch.

+1. Kids won't be going to school 5 days a week. Buses won't be at full capacity.

Where are you getting this insider knowledge from?

I was the first post about buses not being at capacity. I have no insider knowledge but some elementary schools have 600 kids in them and some high schools have 2,000-3,000 kids. Even “small” schools have 400 kids. Nowhere that I have seen is allowing 400 or 4,000 people to gather inside. And places that can open have to do so under capacity restrictions- usually 50% capacity. I know the mantra this is months away and everything could be different, but I am not confident that things will be so different that 4,000 people can “safely” gather inside for 8 hours a day with multiple shared surfaces and common spaces.

So the next option would be to limit capacity somehow - and so that is what I am expecting. I

Ridiculous comment. No one knows this.

I think they will be in school 5 days a week. Because people are opening the economy so will have to group kids in daycare or school, and school is the better option.

Their plan will be to have school open every day for all kids. There is no way they can have one kid per seat.

I would bet a million dollars schools will be open five days a week at full capacity. It’s pretty apparent that the lawmakers want to get this over as soon as possible. Public sentiment regarding this virus has largely changed. Lawmakers can’t go from shutdown to full reopening immediately, but they are trying to get through all the phases as fast as possible.

We were kiss n ride or walkers and had planned a parent carpool to HS, but my rising 9th grader really has her heart set on the bus. She thinks it’ll be fun, but I bet she would change her mind after a few days. It might be easier to let her do it and then decide she wants us to drive her. But I won’t do that if it’s business as usual —standing room only.

I’ll drive because we got into sacc and I can’t wait at home until the bus comes at 8:30.

I think busses will be a deciding factor in decision of who goes back. Would not be surprised if high schools stay virtual to free up bus resources.
