So its pretty clear that camps aren't going to open this summer. We can't keep working the way we are right now. Our ideal would be to have a live-in nanny where we could offer housing as part of their pay. I know this is typically an au pair arrangement, but I'm guessing with all the travel bans right now that's not going to happen...
How would I advertise for this? How could I find someone. And before someone asks, no I would not expect them to work just for housing and I would only need a few hours a day... |
Are you going to require they stay in your house the whole time to ensure no virus is brought in? What are their living quarters? A full basement/ guest house/ bed room? I honestly think you need to bite the bullet and pay a ton or just have a daily sitter that leaves. Using housing to off set compensation is normally a no go. |
care.com, college alumni groups (for a recent grad or a child of an alum), church email lists, local listservs....just ask around. |
Au Pairs are having a hard time right now getting their visas (some ambassies are closed) or just even getting a flight ...
I would pick someone local if I were you. Good luck! |
If she is required to live in as part of her job you cannot deduct room and board from her salary!!!!! Stop being a cheat. |
It not a cheat if the arrangement is mutually beneficial. |
I think you’re much more likely to find someone decent if you let them live out. |
You really shouldn't go into it looking at "housing as part of the pay." The "live in" aspect is usually more for the employer's benefit; no "snow days" or tardiness due to "traffic", etc.
Unless your nanny quarters are something truly extraordinary, the nanny would rather have the opportunity to "get away from work" after her shift. The fact that you also "only need a few hours a day" will also increase the rate/hour. Depending on the actual housing offered (is this a private guest home on a large estate? A basement apartment? A small bedroom sharing a bath with the kids?) I'd try starting around $25/hr and if you don't get any bites from well qualified candidates, raise the rate. |
The problem is anyone who is willing to take a childcare job part time is either going to bail as soon as they get a better job OR is going to be working a second job to make ends meet (and therefore less likely to social distance). |
Plenty of Au pairs are already in the US hoping to land another job after their first ends. Contact an agency. You’d be surprised how many options you have right now.
|
But given that OP only needs this because of covid, she can probably live with someone who is going to bail. OP I wish I could gift you my college student... |
Yeah no. There are more current HFs looking than APs in rematch/extension. Many families are paying well over the normal $200 stipend (some up to $500/week!) and they’re offering signing and completion bonuses, all in hopes that they’ll get an AP again. |
Oh and Trump wants to discontinue foreign workers, including J-1 visa au pairs... so don’t count on out-of-country APs coming in anytime soon... |
This!!!! The only way you’ll find someone who wants a part-time job and will take housing as part of compensation is if you hire a nanny who brings a young child with her to live with you or if you find an online student. |
Not according to Federal law. |
