volkswagen tiguan or lexus nx 300

We are looking for a second car. We are a family of four with one small older SUV. We are moving to the suburbs and will need a second car. We do not need a third row right now (our kids are young and in carseats so we don't do lots of carpooling) but eventually we will. My husband is practical and wants something we can all fit into (take on weekend trips), that is safe, reliable and practical. I want those things too - but I like leather seats, panoramic sunroofs and other bells and whistles. We are trying to find something that meets a happy medium for the next few years.

Right now - we are going back and forth between the Tiguan and the NX 300. Any thoughts? This will likely become our primary vehicle and the older car will be secondary.

You didn't state your budget though...

Cannot fathom anyone fitting in the 3rd row of a Tiguan. Get an Atlas

Lexus is a more reliable car, it’s basically a Toyota engine. I would buy that used before I would buy a Volkswagen

What your describing, I love my 2018 Honda Pilot. I got the middle of the five models, so it has leather seats, sunroof, etc but it also has the 6 speed engine vs the 9 speed that is on the 2 higher models and people reported a problem with.

It has plenty of room for my tweens in the 3rd row. (Not so the Highlander, which we looked at as well.). Plus, reliable as hell. I love it.

Lexus = Toyota

Audi = VW

You will look much, much smarter driving a VW, FWIW.

I wouldn't buy a VW at all. Ever. They lied about their diesels and they are well known for breaking down and having thousands in repair costs as soon as they're out of warranty.

Actually you won't. Most people will look at you and think you were a dumb person that bought an unreliable German car. Maybe it makes you look good with other dumb people though.

The Tiguan is notoriously problematic in a brand that's already notorious for having problems. Hard pass.

I loved my Lexus RX, which is bigger than the NX, but Lexus is just a better car than VW. Just stay away from Pohanka Lexus.

This is a very odd choice. Most people who look at Toyota and Lexus are valuing the reliability and would never ever consider a VW. Me included btw.

Yes, get Atlas. Tiguan is horrible, small, smelly and try to ride in the back sit while someone else drives it, the vibration can make you into a whip cream by the time you get off.

The Atlas is a comparatively terrible car. Miles of plastic on the inside and VW's terrible quality control.

I would never use the terms turbo & practical car in the same sentence. But based on your comment of bells and whistles, I think the volkswagen has more to offer.

Most cars have turbos these days to enhance fuel economy. What car doesn’t have at least one turbo? Maybe some V-8s?
