Bedtime For 2/3 year old?

Anonymous
I have a son who will be 3 in September. He was sleeping 7pm-7am with a nap from 12-2, but he has been wanting to stay up until 8 or waking early from his nap for the past couple of weeks. I also have a 6 month old and he naps 12-2. I selfishly want the nap to stay the same to get things done and have some time to myself, but I won’t force it. Would you adjust the bedtime to 8 or let him nap for only 1 hour? What does your child do?

14 hours of sleep is a lot for that age. Is there something wrong with him developmentally?

OP here. No. He has always been a good sleeper. He is very smart.

My just turned 3 year old sleeps 8/830 (put to bed between 730-8) to 6/630 and then naps about 75% of the days for about an hour (in bed for 1.5)

He’s been doing that for about 6mo now. So yeah yours seems like a lot and you need to reduce somewhere

My almost 3 is at a weird place with sleep. If she sleeps in till 8 am or so, we can get her to bed around 7:30 with no nap. However, if she's up earlier than that, she has nap because she's a wreck by 2 pm at the latest, but then she doesn't want to go bed and isn't sleeping until 9. I'd just rather deal with no nap than that.

My DD is high on the sleep needs but 14 hours per day is too much at this age. I'd aim for more like 12-12.5 hours of sleep per day.

OP here. We will push his bedtime to 8. He is not developmentally behind. He’s actually very smart and has known colors, letters, animals, etc. by 18 months old. He can already read some books. He has been a good sleeper since he was born.

My 2.5 year old sleeps 7:30-6:30/7 and we cap his nap to 1 hour or he’s not tired for bed. Your kid needs less sleep!

I’d go from 8-8.

Some kids are just good sleepers. My daughter slept 12 hours at night until 4th grade. She stopped napping at age 4.

My ds used to sleep like that at that age. Even longer. His nap was sometimes longer. I think at this point, you just follow his lead. I think if he can't fall asleep at 7pm or wake up earlier from his nap, just go with it. Before you know it he will refuse to sleep even if he is tired, get up three million times, and you will be thinking can I put him to bed at 4pm? With him getting up every 5 minutes for 3 hours, maybe he will be asleep by 8pm? Or he won't do this. But, my kids all did it and most kids I know who were excellent sleepers did it by 4.

? That's an average amount of sleep.

Since you have 2 kids on the same nap schedule, adjust bed time to 8 pm and keep the afternoon nap so you have time to yourself.

When your DS starts staying up until 9 or 10, or waking up super early, then drop the nap.

It's not average at that age. It's really high.

But that earlier poster is clearly jealous or something. I know I am.

Keep the nap the same and let him stay up until 8. 14 hours is on the high end of sleep needs for that age.

I disagree that fourteen hours of sleep within a 24HR timeframe is too much sleep.

Even at three yrs. old, your child is still developing rapidly & some require more slumber than others.

I just don’t want any parents who have three-yr. olds who sleep this amount to be worried that something may be off in their child’s development.
