Anyone have any general advice on evaluating moving to McLean from another area travel team? I know they are a higher intensity club which we are looking for. Would joining the lowest team (Gold) be a glorified rec league, or will there be focus and intensity? Trying to get a suss out if the lowest girls team tends to just be that catch all?
Depends on your age group. U9 and U10 train as an age group together. U11 and U12 are your more traditional team trainings. No way in hell Gold would be glorified rec league. Rec league soccer is atrocious.
It is glorified select/classic. |
The lowest team is silver not gold for the younger age groups. That said, you'd want White or Green if you are looking for a highly competitive, more intense experience. The gold and silver teams have slower games.
Thank you. OP here. Reason why I say gold is "lowest" is there is not enough girls to field a silver team in this age group. Appreciate the insights.
Definitely not glorified rec. Definitely more intense than other nearby leagues, but good training and if that is the level that is appropriate for your child, then it will be fine.

Like any club, the lion’s share of the focus is on the top team. At U9-10 at least, the expectations of each player are the same. That they work very hard, more so than at other clubs, even though the focused training is mainly on the top team.
The coaches are just as dedicated as they ask from the players. It’s a lot of work to justify being on the lower teams but the training is good. Much of your player’s improvement will come from outside team practices but it will be good for your child to see the work ethic if they truly want to improve. |
Is there a silver team for U10 MYS or is gold the lowest team?
There was one at the U9 level this past year but who knows how many families sign back up.
Gold and silver are not intense AT ALL. It is not glorified rec in terms of practice hours and general requirements. Anybody who wants to can get on the lower teams.
It is not glorified rec. The teams practice 3 times a week. One of the practices is with the entire age group so they get mixed in with the green and white teams sometimes for scrimmages. It is definately better than rec.
I don't think many of you have seen a Rec game before. It's horrible. For OP: What club are you moving from? If you are looking to move to a bigger club, the time to be on a 3rd team is in U9-U12 age group, not above that.
We all agree that more practices are required, that there are more games, and all the rest that comes with travel soccer. But it is not irrelevant that there is no competition to get on the bottom couple teams. If all that is needed is for mom and dad to sign you up, you are going to have a real range of commitments and abilities at the younger ages.
