Staunton City Council election

Interesting results......

Three Democratic members of the Staunton, Virginia, city council were ousted by Republicans on Tuesday despite receiving more votes than they did four years ago.

Republican candidates Mark Robertson, Amy Darby, and Steve Claffey all joined incumbent Andrea Oakes in a four-seat GOP sweep, WHSV reported. The three incoming council members replaced Democratic incumbents Erik Curren, Ophie Kier, and James Harrington all almost doubled their vote totals from 2016, yet still lost.

“Democrats got their voters out better than they have in a May cycle in years,” Graham wrote. “Republicans got turnout more akin to, not quite a presidential year, but approaching gubernatorial.”

Graham cited gun control legislation in the state as well as COVID-19 lockdowns as key turnout drivers for Republicans in the city.

Nearby Wayesboro also put two conservatives, Lana Williams and Bruce Allen, on their city council to “give conservatives a working majority,” Graham reported.

“Bottom line is that the strategies worked, flipping both from D to R, but the change in Staunton is stunning almost beyond words,” Graham opined. “A city that voted for Barack Obama, twice, voted for Hillary Clinton, voted for Terry McAuliffe and Ralph Northam, even gave a solid majority to Jennifer Lewis in her 2018 congressional run against Ben Cline, is now controlled by Republicans.”

The red areas will further be divided from blue areas. Staunton is the heart of the western part of Virginia.

Interesting that this area went for Obama twice and last election went for Hillary.

So, it was blue. Is a change coming?

I went to school near Staunton years ago. I still have many friends in the area of Staunton, Waynesboro and Harrisonburg. They are for the most part hard core Republicans, except for one who is a teacher.

No. Weird one off local races in a weird city. The only change that’s coming is Trump will lose in a landslide and Dems will retake the Senate.

Are you questioning the facts?
Are you questioning the outcome of the election?

Regular practical people understand the dire stupidity of eternal lockdowns. They are going to vote accordingly. Democrats have really miscalculated the whole lockdown thing. -lifelong Democrat whose industry is decimated

Democrats played this horribly (and I'm one of them). The lockdown forever policy is not as popular as they think and its going to get them destroyed in November.

Yep. Its an echo chamber problem and it's going to backfire tremendously.

Yes. My parents live out there. People are going broke and mad as hell. The longer the shutdowns last, the clearer Trumps path to victory. Even my parents, lifelong democrats, think the lockdown situation is unconscionably stupid. There is no reason to allow Walmart to be open while bankrupting mom and pop operations. Even though stuff is opening now, it’s too little too late.
