Furloughed preschool teacher here. I was thinking about making a summer camp kit for families to use at home. Trying to figure out if this is something parents would want to pay for.
It could include: --simple weekly lesson plan around a theme (not to replicate a whole preschool day, but to give some planned things to do, like 3 activities a day) --weekly packet of materials (like pre-cut art project pieces, or kid science activity ingredients) --video of story reading, songs --teacher-hosted weekly playgroups via Zoom. What would you consider paying for this, per week? Or is there already so much available online? I was thinking a curated plan may be helpful for some. TIA. |
I am paying $99 for 10 weeks for a similar online preschool. |
Lots of people pay for homeschool preschool kits like this. I think they might pay more if it came with some consulting with a teacher. Why not try?
I wouldn't do precut artwork, I prefer more creative things, but maybe a different art supply each week? Something fun to try? |
Zero interest |
Thinking of different things I could offer, that are different than what parents already have access to.
How about: 6 weeks of weekly kits that include materials for -sensory play and exploration: includes a new sensory material each week (slime, kinetic sand, etc) -process art: includes art materials each week for different media, like: fingerpaints and fingerpaint paper, or assemble a wood picture frame and paint to paint it |
I have no interest. There are plenty of craft kits available or sensory things if I want to do that. I’d prefer to choose and personalize to my own child. |
I feel bad critiquing your idea, because I imagine it is hard as a furloughed teacher, but I would hate to see you spend money on a business venture that isn’t viable. I think most of what you’re mentioning is readily available on the internet for free and people wouldn’t be likely to pay for it. |
I’m a nanny and I already get those resources for free online. We are making our own camp over zoom. I don’t mean to put down your idea but just want to give you honest feedback. Right now we are doing an art class, story time and yoga for free from online websites. |
Nanny again- The problem is also parents will need to be involved in crafts etc if it’s little kids. It’s easier for parents to find their own videos online because they know what their kids are able to do on their own. We are doing a small zoom with friends where we do doodles art classes because it’s easy for the kids. Crafts even if they are pre cut will make mess or need parents involvement. There’s read aloud websites already where kids can have story time. If I were you I’d just get a summer job as a nanny. We are in demand and depending on your area you will make more than this idea of yours. I’m in LA and earning $30/hr normally but during pandemic $33 raise. |
I have a 4 year old and wouldn’t find this helpful. She tends to prefer free form art projects rather than the projects her preschool is providing. |
OK, thanks everyone for the feedback. Fair enough; I can see how there might not be a demand for what I'm proposing. |
It's just that there are already a lot of options for this - Outschool, for example |
I do wonder if you could offer tiers.
Tier 1 - 10/ week is just the plans Tier 2- 25/week is plans and materials Tier 3 - 45/ week is plans, materials and two live zoom sessions Discounts for multiple week packages. For many parents the cognitive load of finding and putting together a plan is the work. Yes all this stuff is out there for free / free-ish. But having a schedule with times and breaks and calls and today is frog project - ties to the reading about frogs and the dance party where you jump like frogs, would make things feel cohesive without much work for me. If I want / have time I can make the materials or do a different art project but if I am crunched, I know you are going to send me a box and it has the materials for the week of crafts in it. Some people are super crafty and others are not. Having customizable options might make get you a larger customer base. |
I wouldn't pay for that as we can buy our own supplies and use youtube videos or be creative. Not worth paying a premium as for preschoolers you need to supervise. |
I would pay my children’s current teachers to continue zoom story times and send them videos. There is value to me in that relationship. But I don’t think I’d do a curated camp. We are pretty setup on that stuff already. |
