"art kits" or "decorate your own cupcake kits" for virtual birthday party

Anonymous
I'm looking for ideas of little art kits or maybe pre-packaged cupcake/cookie decorating kits that I could drop off (socially-distanced) at my daughter's friends' houses in advance of a Zoom virtual birthday party. She is turning 10 years old. For example, I saw this one - https://www.etsy.com/listing/727357810/friendship-bracelet-kit?ref=user_profile&frs=1

Any other ideas like this for art projects? Or, Cupcake decorating would be fun, and in a normal time, I could package up little kits myself but I think parents would be more comfortable if they were pre-packaged and dropped on a doorstep.

Would love your ideas - thanks!

We went back and forth on doing something like this as well and decided to forgo it for the reason you state- we don't know the comfort level of other parents of getting kits/ etc from other parents or delivery services and didn't want a kid left out just because her parents were taking different precautions. So we are just doing a virtual party with a magician who has adapting to doing kids parties online.

How about an ice cream sundae party? You could gather the fixings for sundaes and drop them off at the birthday girl's friends' houses in advance. Whipped cream, ice cream, candy toppings in pre-packaged boxes/bags, sprinkles, cherries, etc.

OP - no ideas that better what you've already thought of --- but just wanted to say, I think you have a great idea. Something I would not have thought of.

But, also a different thought, maybe for another time ... there is no reason you can't drive your daughter to a friend's house and let them socialize from a distance in the driveway. Maybe do separate chalk drawings on the driveway. Sit and talk.

Wegmans had some make your own cupcake kits out the other day. They were pretty basic, you might want to add some stuff to them.

Baskin Robbins is doing sundae kits which look fun. They're not really cheap at $25/each, but then again considering what I spent on my 2 year old's party in February once all the decorations and food were accounted for that probably is about right for the cost per family.

If you drop the kits off well in advance, as as parent I could let it sit in a close for a few days and then be pretty comfortable giving it to my child.

That said, it would have to be non-perishable (so art kit, not cupcake kit)

I agree—do the art kit versus the cupcake kit.

Great idea but people’s comfort level is all over the place. I wouldnt do it for that reason

Agreed. Maybe order some inexpensive craft kits from Michaels or 5 below, and deliver them a week in advance. That way even if the parents are 'quarantining' packages, enough time will pass to make it safe.

If you drop off kits, make sure you drop them off up to a week ahead of time so they can sit undisturbed. I'm married to a scientist who is working on covid-19, and we have an ionizing machine system set up in our garage that allows us to sterilize mail and packages in 20 minutes. But your package minus that system would sit in the corner of our garage for a week otherwise.

Please do your part to your guests safe.

We had one parent drop off a cupcake from Georgetown Cupcake. I was completely comforatable letting DD eat that right away. Girls did not decorate it.

DS did a party for a friend turning 10 that included kids in several different states. (Birthday boy moved a lot I the last few years.) He said the best game they played was one where a kid would put himself on mute and say a word or phrase. The other kids then had to guess what he'd said.

DD says zoom charades are pretty fun, too.

Fancy Cakes by Leslie in Bethesda has cupcake decorating kits. Personally I think their cupcakes are far superior to Georgetown Cupcakes.
