I find it fascinating. What accounts for why this one particular drink holds such an appeal for this specific demographic? |
Lots of caffeine. That's why. And the sugar doesn't hurt.
How is this even a question? |
Yeah, but plenty of other people like lots of caffeine as well, plus sugar |
No idea. Was very popular where I grew up. Repulsive diabetes in a bottle. |
Same reason people like coke, Peps. Orange crush, etc...
Caffeine and sugar and somewhat disregard for your health. |
I grew up white, working class. We never had soda in our house except for when we'd throw parties, so maybe 4-6 times a year. We'd get Coke and seltzer and then juice.
FWIW, I always associated Mt. Dew with REALLY poor people - like App. Mountains. |
It's cheaper than coffee. |
OP calls IT white working class? I guess. |
Because it doesn’t cost $5 at Starbucks |
I first heard of it when I was 14 (late 60s) at Bible camp. Not many sodas for kids in those days but we got to buy canteen snacks after activities and swimming in the late afternoon. It was a big thing.
I don't care for it now, but one observation: when running errands sometimes I will get thirsty for a cold root beer (specifically A&W). It is VERY hard to find a single cold root beer, let alone A&W in supermarket or Walmart or Target coolers. You're stuck with Pepsi, Coke, Mt. Dew, energy drinks, and bottles of Starbucks. I don't keep soda at home, it's a once in awhile thing. |
Why do some people like grape soda? Stop making statements based on race you bigot |
I use to love me some Mt Dew back in high school...filled with rich white kids who also loved Mt Dew. |
I'm well-off and I like it. I don't drink soda usually but if it was an option at a picnic I would drink it. |
It's a thing. https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2013/09/12/221845853/mountain-dew-mouth-is-destroying-appalachias-teeth -DP |
Oh come on!
It’s very common. But it’s more lower class than traditional working class. |
