What are you reading? Any chapter books or similar to recommend? We have been reading 5-minte stories and the like but are ready to graduate to something a bit longer. |
We started the magic tree house series and my 5 year old loves it. |
Mercy Watson is great - chapters are quite short, so we usually do a few. It's technically a beginning chapter book, but it's not so basic that the language is stilted or forced.
Paddington is another great one for that age. My Father's Dragon (and sequels) is also a quick read. Charlotte's Web is a long story, but very engaging and the chapters are quite short. Beezus and Ramona has a lot of appeal for that age. Same with The Mouse and the Motorcycle. If your family is OK with somewhat slower stories, Jame's Herriot's Treasury for Children is one of those picture book collections that sort of straddles the line with a chapter book nicely. The Complete Brambly Hedge is another. Roger Duvosin's Petunia books in a collection would be another. |
The first chapter books I read to my kids were the two series My Father's Dragon (charming but bland) and Flat Stanley (light and fun)
Also recommend: The Quiltmaker's Gift (picture book with a lot of text - gorgeous pictures and wonderful story) Princess Tales by Gail Carson Levine Boxcar Children Just-So Stories (beautiful, but dense prose - youcan find great illustrated versions) Magic Tree House/Time Warp Trio Books - the Time Warp Trio books are slightly edgier/rougher Secrets of Droon (the series is great, but the Special Editions are more intense and you might want to skip them for now, or at least proceed cautiously) |
My kids love the Ramona books, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle and Where the Sidewalk Ends. They have also enjoyed listening to Harry Potter. |

Thank you - some real gems on these lists! |

I just finished up reading "Little House in the Big Woods" and it worked surprisingly well on my boys -- we expecting it only to be a hit with the girl. For an only boy audience, I'd probably elide some of the passages on what the ladies were wearing. The "Tom Swift Jr" series was great (the ones published 1950s - 1970s). Bunnicula The Hobbit |
NP. They’ll probably love “Farmer Boy”. |
