Short Caribbean Getaway with 8-month old?

Anonymous
Would you even consider it? I'm just craving a little vacation for the three of us (me, husband, baby). Anyone tried this? Any advice or tips? Recommendations? TIA.

We did Cozumel a few years ago w/ our son.

Another thought would be a short cruise to the Caribbean.

We went to Mexico with our 9 month old and it was the biggest waste of money. Too young at that age to really sit out by a pool or under a hut at the beach, the attention span isn't there. So the only tan I got was on my balcony. I think at that age a city trip is better. Once the kid is walking a beach trip is a lot easier, they walk on the beach and play in the sand.

I agree. Unless you go to one of those places with a nanny or daycare, I think babies and the beach are a disaster. Toddlers and the beach are great.

We went to Italy when DS was 9 m.o. He was happy as a clam to eat pasta and ride in the Ergo (with breaks to climb the Spanish Steps!). IT was really an ideal vaca with a baby.

We went on a week-long cruise when DD was 8 months old, which included 1 afternoon at a beach, and it was fine. It was only 1 afternoon on the beach, though. As long as one of you is willing to sit inside with your DC if s/he gets hot and are willing to cater to needing naps, and etc..... why not?

Yeah, one day is not a week at the beach with a baby who is constantly crawling around getting sand in their mouths, eyes, etc. They are too young to play effectively in the sand and it just turns into a very frustrating experience for the parents. Once the baby becomes a toddler, and gets that you can play in the sand but shouldn't eat the sand, the beach becomes your babysitter and everyone is happy.

We enjoyed our stay at the Frankyn D Resort in Jamaica with our 6 month old and 3 year old. It's not the Ritz, but it was a very enjoyable vacation for all of us. The reviews are all pretty accurate:

loved going to the Melia in DR with our 9 month old for a week. All inclusive is not our norm, and neither is DR but it was one of the best trips we ever had. Babysitters at reasonable rates that were amazing, kids activities that even a 9 month old enjoyed, and a kids club right next to the big pool so we could put him for a nap in their crib, ask the sitters to tell us when he woke up and lay right outside the door at the pool. Great rates through apple vacations.
