| Just watched this again. I cried the whole movie. Love Andy Garcia. It was a good reminder as someone who worries sometimes about my own drinking. I can be/have been a bit like the Meg Ryan character. |

I haven't seen this movie in several years, but the part that I remember is that when things were really bad, the husband suggested going away for the weekend and Meg Ryan indicated that was the problem - they needed to spend some time in reality fixing their problems and not jetting off to get away. Her problem was she always trying to get away. It really struck me.
As someone posted on this board once, "marriage is not the trip to Cabo" - it's so true. Marriage is dealing with life when you are both stressed and sleep deprived and at the end of your rope. Not what when on during your honeymoon. |
| OP, not to state the obvious, but if you're identifying strongly with the alcoholic out of control parent in the film, have you considered seeking treatment or otherwise addressing your drinking? As a now adult child of an alcoholic, I can tell you that your kids (if you have kids) are definitely impacted by your drinking, even if you don't do anything to overtly harm them (like crashing the car). My parent was a different person once alcohol was no longer a factor - a much better person, with whom I now have a strong relationship. |
