MD and VA parks are open. Why are the national parks still closed? |
Bathrooms |
Shenandoah closed because DMVers were crowding the local gas stations to use the bathrooms. It's easy enough to social distance once you're in the park, but people are acting like jerks on the way there. The closures are mainly in place to protect local communities and park staff.

To keep the crowds away. |
+1 Plus, parks have a lot of facilities where distancing would be hard: restrooms, visitor centers, lodges, restaurants or other concessions, etc. |
Also iirc they had documented spreading events at Grand Canyon etc. |
Some people are too dumb to live. |

Crowds. |
So stupid. But also, I'm shocked they didn't have cameras that picked her up before this all happened. I worked for NPS for years. A lot of their workers are seasonal and aren't there at all to monitor, but park police are present. You wouldn't believe how many stupid deaths NPS has yearly- falling off cliffs, selfies with buffalo, getting lost of rogue hiking adventures... People think it's an amusement park or something and are less safe than they normally would be. |
We were suppose to be visiting a series of National Parks these summers. All of them emailed us that the lodges were going to be closed, camp sites were closed, restaurants and stores were not going to open. They were going to be staffed at 1/3 their normal rates. The only accommodations in the park that were going to be open were the Cabins/Cottages.
They cannot staff the Parks because most of the seasonal workers live in dorm style buildings, which cannot happen because of social distancing issues. So don't expect the national Parks to reopen. Heck, the answer is actually pretty easy if you have ever been to these Parks during a busy season. There are large crowds and no social distancing. The bathrooms are crowded every where. The most popular attractions and trails are packed. |
We are going to Maine in July. Supposedly Acadia is opening roads and trails June 1. Camping June 15. |
Yeah, I forgot about the dorms for the summer workforce. No way are those safe if even one person gets COVID. |
Because the WH thinks you should stop your “endless vacation” and go back to work. |
