Wisdom tooth removal

Anonymous
My son is 15 and had his braces removed last August. He needed to have one wisdom tooth removed so his surgery was scheduled for spring break. I canceled it. He is done school in 2 weeks and then has a month before summer school starts. The tooth isn’t causing any pain but it does need to be removed. The oral surgeon is open for business again. Should I just go ahead and have it done?

I would wait. Long story short...Friend’s daughter had it done and had serious complications involving a bone infection requiring multiple surgeries and going to the hospital for months to be hooked up on some machine several days a week...she was 17. At one point they thought she wouldn’t make it. It’s very rare but I would not risk it during the pandemic.

Oh please this is ridiculous scare mongering.

OP speak to your kid's dentist / ortho and find out how long they think you can wait before it starts impacting on the other teeth. August / Sept may be better.

I had it done at 17 and the recovery was so quick, not even a week

you could probably wait for years to remove that tooth before it is an issue.

OP here. I had all 4 of mine done at once and the recovery wasn’t a big deal. I just worry about something wrong happening and having to go to the hospital. He has the x-ray in late August so we are closing in on a year since then. Spring Break was the only time he had off school for long enough to recover and not miss school. Now he will have a month where he has nothing at all to do.

PP who was worried about complications is the one I'm with...I would wait. One of my closest friends in HS died after having a wisdom tooth removed. She was fine during procedure and was home and 24 hours later needed to go to the ER and they were not able to save her. In college my then boyfriend (now DH) had his tonsils removed and ended up back in the emergency room with uncontrolled bleeding that they said if we had waited any longer he might not have made it...This atmosphere is all about that rare instance where something goes wrong and if it is not an emergency I would wait.

Why don't you ask the orthodontist how long your child can wait to have this tooth removed? You don't want an erupting tooth to move other teeth.

I had one removed and it was hell, it depends on the person; however, much better if done as a child! I would wait if not causing a problem as regardless there is downtime ...

Surprised oral surgeon is open for business, if you don't need urgent surgery for anything don't do it. He was the whole summer what's the rush?

Dentist here. It doesn’t work that way. The erupting too the will only affect the tooth in front of it. And it won’t move it, but can potentially cause decay.

What place is having summer school?

Anyway, I'd do it.

My DD had hers done and only felt bad that day. She didn't even need the hydrocodone they gave her for the next day.

My DS had his done last summer and was in more pain, but it still wasn't that big of an issue. I think he took the pain pills the day of and the day after and that's it. He stuck with the liquid diet for much longer than DD did, though.

My third teen is having his out later this summer and only has 2 (both upper). I was thinking of moving the appointment up from August to June in case we have more freedom to move about in August.

I’ll call the orthodontist. As far as I know, his school’s summer school will be online beginning at the end of June and going for 7 weeks. I hope we can spend a week at the beach before going back to school at the end of August. So he doesn’t have all summer to do this.

Wait to do it. It isn't going to make a difference if you wait a few years. Why would you consider this now?
