| My junior is in a weird boat. She doesn't want to go to a big state school or a small LAC. Her stats are 3.8 and 1450 so she's not quite at the top tier (though she's thinking of EDing to Penn as a long shot). She's interested in Emory and Georgetown (both considered reaches) but beyond that, doesn't seem to like very many schools. I took her to see Boston University and Wash U thinking they may be up her ally but she didn't like either. She wants to major in either history or poli sci. Any idea for schools she may like? |

She's not out of the Penn ballpark for ED if her app is impressive. Other schools to try:
- Northwestern - Notre Dame - Rice - Wake Forest - Tufts - Case Western All of these schools are really different but they all meet the criteria you listed. It's hard. There really aren't a lot of private schools between 5000 and 15000 worth going to. |

Maybe medium-sized universities, as Emory and Georgetown are. (BU would be too big and too urban if she likes a traditional campus the size of Gtown and Emory.)
Vandy, Tufts, Wake, Boston College, Tulane, Villanova, Santa Clara, American. Though these would be in the range for a 1450/3.8, there are other, more- and less-selective mid-size universities, U Miami, LMU, Fordham. |
| DD was the same way. She ended up at Georgetown. Her main complaint throughout the application process was that a lot of these schools were Greek heavy and one of the main reasons she didn't want to go to a big state school was she didn't want Greek. But that's what you get when you don't want to go to an LAC. |
| What does Ed mean |
|
Early decision
For safeties, maybe Franklin Marshall or GW? (For those majors?) |
F&M is like the epitome of a rural LAC. |
| University of Rochester |
| Tufts and Wesleyan have a little more of a small university feel than most SLACs.. Definitely feel bigger. Case Western is a good idea. |
|
She can do a 5 year program at tufts and the fletcher school.
|
| Interested in going to LA? My DD was looking at those mid-size schools and liked USC, Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount. |
Pepperdine and LMU are mid-size. USC is large (20k undergrads + 27k grad). |
| Re: west coast, 3.8/1450 might be up for some decent merit money at the west coast mid-size options (SCU, LMU, and let's not forget USD). Their Net Price Calculators include a merit estimate. |
But it's not a big state school - about same UG enrollment as BU. I mentioned it bc my DD also liked Georgetown and Emory. |
| Vanderbilt? |
