Kids With Special Needs and Disabilities
| I have an 8 yr. old son who was recently diagnosed with ADHD (inattentive). He is doing fairly well on medication but I am trying to find out as much as I can about other treatments. I have seen references to Kelly Dorfman on this site and am thinking about making an appointment with her. Have others noticed that making changes to their childrens' diets made a difference in attention/focusing symptoms. I have also read that they are supposed to eat a lot of protein when they take the medicine. I am trying to do this with my dc but he protests. What do your dcs typically eat in the morning with their medicine? Thanks! |
| We've tried different diets and found that none of them have an effect on our kids' ADHD. Our oldest takes Foucalin and we've found having a couple of Triskets or some applesauce in the morning is sufficient to keep the medicine from irritating his stomach. |

Here are somethings we have found helpful with attention/focus. So far we have been able to avoid meds...
1.) fish oil supplement 2.) eliminate red dye 40 and high fructose corn syrup 3.) B vitamin supplements 4.) decrease sugar intake and try to avoid processed foods when possible 5.) eat whole grains-helps avoid spikes in blood sugar |
| PP- Can you tell us how much Vitamin B you've been using? |
| My child is 8. Anyone know the dosage for fish oil supplements and a good brand? |
|
Nordic Naturals (Jr.) is a good brand because it is tested by a 3rd party for heavy metals and impurities, AND it has natural lemon or orange flavoring and comes in a chewy or capsule form that is not revolting to kids.
Some other brands at Whole Foods are also 3rd party tested for toxins, I've noticed, but they're not packaged for kids. |

I agree-nordic naturals is the best. The dose is apparently 1/2 teaspoon, but we use much less. If my child tastes the fish oil in juice-forget it!
Re:vitamin B-not sure just got a supplement from the store. |
For an 8 yo, is the dosage 1/2 tsp or 1 tsp? |
| I use Nordic Naturals Cod Liver Oil but not the kind for kids. Just the regular lemon flavor for adults. And I read that over 40lbs, the dosage is 1 teaspoon. |
| We elimated all food dyes and artificial flavorings and most artifical preservatives and saw a reduction in hyperactivity. |
