I'm ready to start using natural remedies. Please educate me.
So sick and tired of being sick and tired. I had a head cold in Nov, Dec and now have a new one for Jan. First, I'm thinking of taking a daily Vit D supplement because it has been shown to lower the occurance of colds. Second, I want to take something besides Tylenol and Sudefed when I feel sick (which is right now - headache, sore throat, pressure in ears, some body aches). |
Lots of OJ
As much rest as I can get Neti Pot |
I got over mine with Cold-Ezze and the neti pot. It was gone in 4 days (they usually last forever). |
The last very bad sinus infection I had the doctor suggested a neti pot. She also said if I felt one coming on to start it immediately. It works and usually clears up in just a few days. |
Garlic "tea": take 3 cloves of garlic, peel, and cut in half crosswise. Put in a pot with 2 cups of water, juice of half a lemon, and 2 tbsp of honey. Boil for 15 minutes. Cool off a bit and drink the whole thing.
Every time I feel a throat tickle (precursor to getting sick for me), I drink this for 2 days (twice a day) and I have NOT gotten sick this entire fall/winter beyond a throat tickle and one runny nose. |
Garlic tea maker is now *knocking on wood* |
Daughter of an ENT here. Cold-Ezze is doc recomended. Really, anything with zinc that is SLOW RELEASED into your system will work, as opposed to swallowing a vitamin. Vitamin C is basically an old wives tale and Zinc is the only think proven to halt a cold. Caution: STAY AWAY FROM ZICAM! The kind you put in your nose causes loss of sense of smell. There have been lawsuits over this and nothing has officially been proven because of settlements, but I assure you--don't risk it!
I also suggest eating wasabi. |
I make this tea with ginger instead of garlic and it seems to work just as well and is a little less offensive. |
I do too. I also add a bag of green tea as well. I made a pot for myself tonight. |
I have had very good luck using slow release zinc and elderberry tea. I use both at the first sign of a cold and it seems to ward it off or at least reduce the length and severity of cold. I use Traditional Medicinals brand of elderberry tea. I also think eating a regular diet with a lot of ginger and garlic (not just when you feel a cold coming on) is helpful. Mushrooms both in capsule form as well as the real thing are supposed to improve immunity. Hand washing and a good nights sleep help too! |
Water. Lots and lots and lots of water. |
Lots and lots of sleep. Get into bed as early as you can. |
Neti pot. Use it a couple times a week to keep colds away and allergies at bay. If you're really stuff, bite the bullet and use Afrin or similar until the gunk is loose enough that the Neti pot can flush it out.
Gargle with warm salt water with turmeric added when you feel the sore throat coming on. Warning: I can tolerate the taste, DH needs to add honey to do it without gagging. |
$2 saline solution/spray for the nose. Cheaper than the neti and it basically rinses out the sinuses. |
The little bottles of spray don't do anywhere near a good a job as the neti pot. A little spray can't loosen up what's in there as well as a cup of water flowing through the sinuses. And you have to keep buying them, so the neti is cheaper over the long run. |
