If activities go virtual in the Fall

Anonymous
In autopilot, I signed up for an activity in the fall. I have a 5 yr old. She’s in it now and as soon as it went virtual she has no interest. Will not Zoom or watch the video so we stopped. She just wants to see the other kids and teacher.

Fast forward, I didn’t think about the possibility that virtual could continue in the fall. It’s $1000s of dollars flushed down the toilet if virtual.

Would you withdraw now? Or wait until Fall and see what’s up.

What sort of activity? We do viturual instrumental lessons for 7 and 11 yo but they were already taking lessons with the same instructors in person before. I’d ask for a refund if my kids were not into it. That’s just too much money.

1000’s of dollars on an activity for a 5 yo? If withdraw regardless of covid. You have more money than brains.

I have older kids (12 and 9) and I’m not signing anybody up for anything until we have firm confirmation things are really happening. Nope nope nope.

My DD is 5 and is ok continuing dance and gymnastics with familiar instructors and classmates via Zoom. I’m not signing her up for dance this summer or fall, and not enrolling her in new activities until I know they’re in person. She is sticking with gymnastics online because it’s only 1x/week and they’ve reduced it to 25% of the normal cost since it’s just conditioning.

I wouldn’t continue if she doesn’t enjoy it or sign up for anything new. My 6 and 10 year old are both on a gymnastics team in different levels. They were already doing this prior to Covid but are continuing with their regular coaches on Zoom. I would not be paying thousands of dollars, though. While my kids gymnastics was normally around $250 a month per kid it is now $75 for an hour Zoom per day Mon-Fri. , I would not continue paying the $250 if it’s only virtually.

Withdraw and donate the money to a local food bank.

There is increasing evidence that there is no spread of covid between kids.

School, activities and classes will all be back in the fall if not before.

Kids can bring it home to parents.

I would not sign up for anything this calendar year, unless you know the cancellation policy.

This doesn't apply if your income has been impacted by the shutdown, but if you've got thousands to spend on activities you can spare the money to ensure that local businesses that provide activities you use stay in business, teachers get paid, etc. We spend far less on activities, and we did not ask for a refund for dance, music, or the pool even though we can't use those services (our daughter won't sit for a Zoom class and obviously the pool isn't opening), because we value these services and want to make sure they're around to reopen when possible.

We're thinking less about what we get for our money for money we'd spending anyway and more about what we can do with our money. If we can use it to make sure that there are dance classes when we reopen, we're doing that.
