What cutbacks will schools make next year?

Anonymous
Since schools will have much smaller budgets, this coming school year, what do you predict they will cut back on first. Obviously it’s quite unlikely that employees will receive a cost of living raise. But outside of that, what cutbacks do you think will happen?

No before or after school programs, no art or music, no sports.

Ugh. Another doom and gloom post.

This isn't just some doom and gloom post. Obviously schools will have much less money and cuts are going to be made. Why is it fine to speculate about when school will restart, but not ok to wonder about what services/programs will be cut with the smaller budgets?

Do you prefer fantasy? The real world has budgets.

Do you work in education or know someone who does? Where I am, schools are hiring like crazy for next year. I've already had a few interviews.

We have been told no cost of living raises or stop increases. Some new or open positions have now been cut. That’s all I know so far.

Staffing is obviously a must have. There may be deep cuts elsewhere.

I expect employee contribution to health insurance premiums will increase

Things like languages in lower grades, buses for sports, in addition to some sports themselves.

A lot depends on whether and how long kids will physically be in the schools.

Buses for sports? We do not have those in our MCPS MS or our HS. Parents (and 11th and 12th graders with driver's licenses and cars) have to drive the athletes.

I hope schools cut the heck out of sports.

And that's exactly the opposite of what I hope. Kids learn so much from participating on sports teams. It is a true value-added activity.

I think all our TA's are going to lose their jobs. And the coaches. And the librarians. And a bunch of people at central office. And some of the front office secretaries. I don't think any of the specials teachers will survive or if they do, it'll be 10% of normal staffing. I also think class sizes are going to increase and many young teachers are going to lose their jobs. I suspect that if not this fall, then next, school districts will lose 50% of their funding.
If people think things are bad now.....

Maybe so but it does not need to be connected to school. Go ahead and enroll in karate or soccer or whatever your kid likes.
