I have searched this forum up and down- and don’t really hear from people who moved to Baltimore. I’ve seen a few posts that vary across house porn to crime but I was hoping to start a dedicated thread to Baltimore and the brave souls that planted new roots there.
Where do you live in Baltimore? Cost of living is lower- what do you trade for that? Do you work there or commute to DC? Have children? If so what school And anything I should consider besides housing stock crime and commute issues? Me: AA mom, 38, 5yr old son, self -employed and currently living in Shaw and previously lived in ft belvoir |
Two places you won’t find much of in this forum....Baltimore and Pg County. It’s beneath them. |
Crime!!! |
I lived in Baltimore(a decade ago) and moved away. I'm strongly considering moving back. Charles Village, Homewood, Hampden, Mt. Washington, Fed Hill, and Canton are some neighborhoods that I am considering. Roland Park Elem is considered the best, but there a few other schools that are okay, Mt. Washington and Hempstead Hill. I'd say Col is cheaper, but there's less stress, more interesting people, not as many museums(but lots of culture). |
I really don’t understand why. I saw a recent thread asking for Cap Hill likeness across America and plenty people mentioned Federal Hill - Baltimore. There has to be a few people that can speak to their transition to Baltimore. I’m aware nothing comes without it’s headaches. |
Also if your considered about crime and riff raff, Towson is an option and has decent schools for your child |
I lived in fed hill for a decade- moved to the county last year. It’s a lovely neighborhood for young kids (when stuff is open obviously). But crime is sadly a big issue. Robberies, carjackings etc we’re getting more common when we moved out. |
Also property taxes are crazy. We still own and rent our approx 300k rowhouse in fed hill and property taxes are less than they are on our 550k county house on nearly an acre. |
^^MORE than they are on our county house not less. Sorry. |
Even in federal hill? Goodness -Okay I hear you! |
We would have loved to buy a 550k house in Roland park with walk ability and a good elementary school but with property taxes the monthly payments on even a 500k house would have been hard. Taxes are insane. |
It makes me sad to admit that because I LOVE fed hill. But the crimes were going from “oh my car window got smashed” (no big deal for city living) to “my friend got smacked with a pistol in the head while she was walking with her newborn at 330pm”. Granted that particular crime was all over the FB pages and in the news too I believe. And my friends say the last 6 months haven’t been so bad. But I don’t know, it was a main reason we moved in the end ![]() |
OK ok it sounds like outside of the obvious, taxes are the next biggest issue? - Op |
That’s very scary. I’m sorry and my heart goes out to her. Truly. The crime is not lost on me. |
My elderly mom downsized to a rowhouse near the stadiums about a decade ago. She has not experienced any crime. Her block is well lit and 90% homeowners. The biggest issue is drunk and rowdy sports fans or concert goers who try to park on the block. Otherwise, it is friendly and safe. Her pet peeve is litter. I wish there was a decent grocery store in walking distance, but that is a moot point right now. |
