Columbia vs northwestern for undecided

Anonymous
Time is up and my senior still hasn’t decided. Any been there, done that anecdotes I can share? He’s planning to study engineering, but can also see himself switching to a liberal arts major.

Both are great. Does he want NYC vs. Evanston?
Anonymous
He’s fine with either location, which makes decision harder.

These locales are so wildly different I’m almost surprised someone would have a hard time choosing.

Just let him decide. He can flip a coin. Both are great schools.

He just finished his cereal and declared northwestern. I posted prematurely.

Congratulations to him. As a mom, I would be happy to not have him in NYC at this time.

As someone who faced a very similar choice I think this is the right one. NYC these days is for bankers but Evanston/Chicago is such a wonderful place to be young.

Congratulations! I’m a Northwestern alum and absolutely loved my time there. I’m also still close to many of my college friends. Evanston and Chicago are both great areas.

Meanwhile, my HS senior has still not decided!

NW over Columbia? For the right trade off - greater FA at NW, yes. All things being equal or similar, no.

Congrats from another Northwestern alum. Also, OP, it'll be a good place for him whether he stays with engineering or if he switches to liberal arts. Encourage him to take liberal arts classes of interest to him even as he's pursuing engineering. He'll be well rounded and a more interesting and interested person. Good luck to him!

Everyone is different. My DS turned down Columbia for Berklee school of music last year, full pay.
