Low HGC levels early in pregnancy?

Anonymous
I'm just 5 weeks pregnant and the HGC levels were doubling every two days like they should. I just got a call from the fertility Doc saying he wants to do an ultra sound on Monday because the HGC level was around 900 today and he said that was on the lower end. I am freaking out. He said it's possible that it's an etopic pregnancy or they could find something is wrong with the baby.. or it could be nothing. We now have 5 days to worry. Has anyone been told early on in their pregnancy that the HGC levels were lower than average? Should I be so worried?

I think that since the levels have so far been doubling you should be on a good track. Did you start from a very low base so that the 900 could be just low because of that? I remember an IVF friend who started at level 29 - so it would take her a long time to get to 900 - but she was doubling OK and now has a healthy baby.

Ectopic is possible, unfortunatelly it cannot be ruled out until the u/s. But i think 900 is a good number - both of my ectopics leveled off at 250 if it gives you any piece of mind.

I wish you the best, i hope you will see a little bean in the right place at the u/s.

900 seems within the range. Check out this website:

I think it sounds like the normal range. I think had an hcg level of around 1,000 on my third blood draw after an IVF cycle and that pregnancy was successful. It was a few years ago and I think my levels when something like this 190, 425, 1017. Is there anyway you could get them to do another blood test today or tomorrow to see if your levels are still rising?

The exact same thing happened to me and I went on to deliver a healthy baby. My fertility doc told me not to celebrate my pregnancy just yet as my HGC levels were low (I don't remember the numbers). It was aganozing waiting for the 6-week US, but everything turned out to be perfectly fine. Try not to worry too much (impossible, I know). Good luck!

OP here. Thanks to everyone for the advice and support. We had our first ultra sound today and everything was perfect! Hearing other people's stories helped us stay somewhat sane this week.

I have a beautiful girl who is 5 now..and have been trying to have a baby for more than 2 years..back in 2006 I found out I was pregnate and that my hgc levels were low, so the following week I had another test done and everything was progressing normally, just a few days after that I landed in the hospital and had an erupted tubal pregancy and lost my left tube, 8 months later I got pregnate again and the pregancy found it's way to the damaged tissues of the old tube and started to form, requiring another surgery to remove it..I have just found out again that I am pregnate after just having x-rays done on my knee and also found out my hgc levels are low again..I am hoping and praying that everything is ok but, don't have a lot of reassurance after all I have been thru..Althought many have had successful pregancies with low hgc and tubal pregancies, so I guess we will just have to wait and see..
