Colleges and Universities almost universally plan to be open in the fall

According to Mike Spivey, a higher education expert who says this is being discussed behind the scenes but that public announcements from each school won't come out until May through July. https://blog.spiveyconsulting.com/universities-colleges-and-law-schools-plan-to-be-open-on-campus-this-fall/

They are planning and hoping. And they are also planning alternatives if they can't. They are at the mercy of their state governments.

I'm optimistic, but I see pessimists all over the place.

Life goes on. After an 8 week period during the 1918-19 Spanish Flu the flu died off. People moved on with their lives.

We are moving forward as usual. My son is making plans with his new roommate, planning on what to take, and what he needs to buy. Fully expect move in date to remain August 15th. 109 days to go, and it will fly by.

They have to say that. The decisions from students are due this week. If they announce closure they will not get students and will have to lay off staff etc etc and it'll be a big tumble. So they're gambling on it being ok. It's unknown if they will open and have to socially distance students and do online classes while kids are in the dorms. Much easier to say they are open now and take deposits (which they can take time to return) than the other way around.

This exactly. Nobody really knows what will happen but they are trying to lock kids in.

Lots of details about their plans too. How could colleges afford to have social distancing in classes and dorm rooms (podcast says all singles, no roommates)? How would they have room for that?

Wow, I never even thought of that, but it certainly makes sense. But why aren't they announcing publicly then instead of just rumblings among random higher ed insiders?

And what happens when one person in a dorm inevitably gets it? They’d have to evacuate everyone, right? But then where do those kids go?

Curious as to how you got this wrong. I'm not the most interested in history, but even I know there were 3 waves that spanned several months.

Because they don’t want to be held to the statement.

Lots of decision deadlines were moved to June 1.

Yes, this is what I'm most worried about. Not sure how you can do effective contact tracing when if a kid lives in a dorm and tests positive, they've probably "contacted" probably half the people in that building in some way or another. They can't quarantine everybody.

Good. They should plan to open. Be positive.

I almost think it's more of an optimistic outlook to think colleges won't open. If they do, it will be putting their financial interests over public health.
