Why should football and basketball have to support non revenue producing sports. Why should ncaa mandate that div. 1 schools have 16 sports. Who goes and watches college golf or tennis? Interesting that football and basketball teams are usually made up of minority players who then subsidize primarily sports with white players.

Agreed with first part of your comment. Then you bring race into it. Anyhow, I love watching college football and b-ball. And it would be neat if my kid played college soccer, but money-losing college sports (which almost all are) are a drain financially. Personally I think school sports should stop at high school. Pro leagues should have no age restriction outside of being 18, and even then exceptions can be made with parental/guardian approval. More minor leagues would pop up to serve those that aren’t quite good enough for the big leagues (like baseball). Meanwhile, colleges would focus on academics and research and not sports hype and fame.

A petition isn’t going to help anything. Going back to work is the way to help this

I agree. It would be a better system to have more minor leagues that actually pay the players.

Why does revenue from the business school have to support the engineering school?

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that all sports are in trouble. Major schools with prominent f-ball or b-ball or both will survive. Those that don't have such a profile will struggle. No way in this environment can schools justify funding athletics out of tuition.

Anyone suggesting that athletics and academics don't mix are either foreigners or nerds. Sports are a major part of school culture. That might change but not without a serious fight. The question is whether non-revenue sports will survive.

My son played JuCo soccer and it was a great experience. Helped pay his way and he got to play two years of reasonably competitive soccer.

That said...I'm increasingly of the mind that college sports should be downsized. The amenities and infrastructure devoted to many college sports seem to be part and parcel of the move to sell the "college experience" to parents; right along with high-end dining halls, rec centers, etc. Maybe it's time to let the kids take over the sports, like club sports at Colleges already do.

Of course, that would mean shutting down a lot of facilities and a lot of jobs, and I don't take that lightly.

The financial realities facing colleges and universities is very real. Don't be surprised if some fail.

Save white kids sports subsidized by the labor of black athletes! Peak whiteness over here.

A host of schools will likely fail and some sports will go away. It is hard to imagine women's soccer goign away but if a school funds its athletics program with tuition dollars, I don't see how it can continue doing so in this enviornment.

How dumb. I mean, on the list of things that are important, this has to be at the bottom.
