Best garden bed edgers

Anonymous
My yard doesn't have any edgers between the end of the beds and the grass. I don't like grass getting into beds or weeds passing between the two and I wonder how I might be able to make it look more polished and defined. Should I use plants or stones/edging materials to serve as a barrier? What plants or edger do you recommend?

Im planning to line my flower bed with variegated liriope. Its pretty. Has purple during summer and otherwise is evergreen.

I think every kind requires maintenance. Certainly stones. Those steel edge things might work a little better for a little longer.

I’ve tried both stones and the metal edging and neither maintained a clean line between the grass and my beds. After googling this spring and watching some videos I bought myself a garden edging tool. Like this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Ames-Steel-Landscaping-Edger-2917200/206297047

Thanks! How has this tool been working for you? I have an electric edger for grass (along the sidewalk) with trim line, but it seems that wouldn't work for this. If you think it helps, I may get one too. Do you still use the stones or metal edging, or did you get rid of those?

I love lemonball stonecrop and it grows like crazy in terrible soil conditions.

Best and cleanest is to use a sharp square shovel and make a clean line in the grass and mulch the beds. I’m lazy to do that so I use big stones we dug up all over the yard. Rustic.

NP I’ve used both. I’m happier with an electric edger.

I like the look of creeping plants making a soft edge along the grass. So I’ve been slowly growing creeping thyme, phlox, and lime-colored oregano along the edges of my beds. It’s so pretty and cottage-y.

Yes that’s what we use. We edge and put new mulch down. The edges are always nice and sharp. I never have grass in my flower beds. Are you in the dc area? Our grasses don’t grow like that. In Florida, Augustine grass grew like that and sent shoot everywhere

I use this too! I do it every spring to clean the lines up and have them look sharp again.

We DIYed a straight brick edging between the grass and flower bed. Took us 3 hours, 2 people. We excavated dirt (50 ft) and layed down brick.

We have a traditional brick house so the brick matched the style.
